My Response to "The Essentials of a good Education"
The article "The Essentials of a Good Education" taken from author "Diane Ravitch's Reign of Error: The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America's Public Schools" focuses heavily how the focus on standardized testing as a result of programs such as "No Child Left Behind" is failing to prepare students for the world outside of school. Ravitch wrote that budget cuts in public education is causing the elimination of subjects other than the reading and math skills in which they are required to test for; and that is resulting in children not getting a properly balanced education. That we should evaluate schools as if we are from a demanding family; as "they expect their children to have much more than training in basic skills." A student should be well rounded in many areas. Such as reading, history, economics, statistics, science, judgement, foreign language, ethical, and even physical. Diane states "All of these studies are important parts of a rich and balanced curriculum." And that society can't afford to limit these skills. As they are essential things that will help "children to be prepared as citizens to participate in a democratic society."
Diane Ravitch has provided an insightful look into how most children nowadays aren’t getting the proper education they deserve; an education in which mainly the affluent can afford. What with things like the No Child Left Behind law, the Race to the Top program, standardized testing, and the cutting back and elimination of untested subjects. There are studies that show that this way of schooling could be increasing depression and anxiety in students as well. In fact, about 26% of students suffering are reporting that their schooling is one of the main reasons for their depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses. (Clark 2016) One Study tested children in a normal classroom testing environment and found that nearly all of them experienced some form of test related anxiety either prior to or after the test.
There may be ways to solve this problem. New laws could be passed that would give more funding to schools so that they can properly educate students. Preparing them for life after education. This could be used to provide entertaining classes that benefit students education wise, as well as mental health wise; there would be a way to release all of that pent up angst. If children have a reason to want to go to school, then maybe they won't be as stressed and depressed. Schools would still have standardized testing but school would be more fun over all so that kids don't hate their lives while they're
