The first day of school at any level typically resonates among students as the most laidback day. In college, it is most likely the only day that material is not lectured to half asleep students and instead students sit bright, cheery eyed listening to the professor go over the class syllabus. This style of text encompasses what the professor intends to accomplish and teach students throughout the duration of the course. Looking within the setting of a lab class at the UW, the CHEM 242 syllabus serves to educate students of certain standards regarding the actions and attitudes of students to promote a sense of safety, preparedness, and responsibility in lab.
