Life is an individual’s existence, life is something a person claims, life can be something a person wants to become, but what truly makes life worth living? Some individuals believe that humans exist and time proceed to go and that is just how life is, perhaps some may think that life is where people live and die for no cost and others believe that there is a God who created an ending for lives that are lived, they either go to heaven or hell. In detail, Roger Ebert was a writer and a movie critic, one of the best who became superb on his work of field, unfortunately trials came upon him, such as cancers and surgeries, Ebert’s surgery with his thyroid was successful and he recovered quickly according to Jones, but as he returned to work his salivary glands were partially removed, and he had to undergo though many radiation treatments, but the cancer surfaced again. This time his mandible has to be removed, and even close to dying by bleeding to death, but he survived. Although Roger Ebert went through all of these struggles, Ebert was able to find happiness by writing. Jones said, “he writes on a scrap of paper one afternoon after someone parting looks at him a little sadly. Look how happy I am” (paragraph 27, Jones). Even though Ebert has some struggles he was happy to be in his situation because he has lived an enjoyable life and a joyous one. Jones stated that, “According to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, and something to make ourselves a little happy”. ( Jones, paragraph 34). Another example of living and death is Shakespeare’s book called “Hamlet”, this novel is about a prince whose father was murdered by his uncle and he ought to seek revenge, but he is conflicted because killing his uncle is not the right action to take, but he has to do it because a spirit showed up stating how his father was murdered. Hamlet chose to dwell on the dark side of life, he believe that seeking revenge for Hamlet (king) is the only way to seek peace and happiness, “Haste me to know'that I, with wings as swift As meditation or the thoughts of love, May sweep to my revenge” (1.5.31-37). Hamlet (prince) decided to follow what the ghost said and this resulted a more sorrowing life and he chose dwell on his father’s death and kill his uncle which caused his death. In this novel, it represents that, to some individuals taking the other road is the preferable way.
