Subcultures exist all over America. Some are accepted, while others are not. An interesting subculture I came across was bodybuilding. Bodybuilding is “a type of weight training applied in conjunction with sound nutritional practices to alter the shape or form of one's body” (Bodybuilding.com). Bodybuilding is a sport that can be either recreational or competitive. This subculture stood out to me because I have been seeing it across social media within the last few months and was interested in learning more about this group. Bodybuilding is said to be originated from India and can be traced as far back to the eleventh century (Edinformatics.com). Men would compete by lifting stones to see who had the most stamina. It was not until the late …show more content…
Some bodybuilders may go every day or even twice a day. Typically they meal prep. By doing this, they prepare all of their meals on one day to last the whole week. They package the food away and heat or cook it each day. Most of the time they eat lean and healthy meals, but on occasion they are allowed “cheat meals,” meaning they can have something outside of their diet. Bodybuilders generally do not go out and party and they stay away from alcohol because bodybuilders really value their health. Besides valuing health, I asked Alicia what she valued as a bodybuilder. She stated, “I think we value ourselves more and our dedication and heart for the sport. Were so committed to this lifestyle and have so much motivation that when we see our hard work pay off, you know you can do anything.” Each subculture has their own special language, including bodybuilding. Some words or sayings they may use are: gym rats, pumping iron, cutting up, freak, guns, 1RM (1 rep max), pump, and shredded (Getbig.com). While collecting data from multiple websites, there were numerous images of bodybuilders. The typical male bodybuilder will wear a speedo in a competition, and a female will wear a bikini. In the gym, men will wear muscle tanks and shorts, while females have no specific style. There are many protein and bodybuilding companies that have their own clothing line that both genders wear and promote in the
Taking all this into consideration the goal of my paper is not to discourage you from working out, but rather inform you in the realities of weight lifting. The media and society continues you to fill out heads will lies about weightlifting weather its gender stereotypes and just the belief that one can achieve the stereotypical perfect body. There should be a greater understanding of how the media incorrectly portray weight lifting, working out, the idea of the perfect body and how society.
It is a nutritional eating lifestyle, which allows you to achieve your health goals in the most convenient and efficient manner. At the same time, it maintains your trim and fit physique as soon as you attain your goals.

A subculture can consist of any small group outside the central or key majority group. The groups can range from an organized crime group, to an Asian American group, to a religious group, to even a hippie commune. The main focus of this unit is the immigrant subcultures. The immigrant subculture that is becoming more commonplace every day in the United States is the Mexican Americans. Mexican Americans have many religious traditions, ceremonies, customs, as well as art and music forms. There are also various cultural traditions. Mexican Americans have their own identity on the contrary they still have distinct American characteristics.
During the sixties Americans saw the rise of the counterculture. The counterculture, which was a group of movements focused on achieving personal and cultural liberation, was embraced by the decade’s young Americans. Because many Americans were members of the different movements in the counterculture, the counterculture influenced American society. As a result of the achievements the counterculture movements made, the United States in the 1960s became a more open, more tolerant, and freer country.
The people in subculture are very hard working, live a very healthy lifestyle and are proud of what they do. Some do this professionally and make a living out of it. While there is no age limit to this subculture it can go anywhere from 17 year olds to 70 year olds in the subculture who live this lifestyle. Others just enjoy it as a hobby or a way of staying in shape and being fit.
The dizzying laser lights flashed in synchronicity with the pulsating bass of the music that bounced off the psychedelic warehouse walls. As my boyfriend and I mentally attempted to organize the chaos surrounding us, we pushed our way through the crowd of spasmodic lunatics who contorted their bodies in time with the music and lights. We located a couch in a room covered with cartoonesque, hyper-graphic graffiti. An androgynous man sat himself at my feet and began massaging my thighs, while a girl with her eyes rolled back into her head demanded that my boyfriend give her a massage. Just then the deejay laid his head in my lap, told me he was in love with me, and placed a bitter pill on my tongue. This certainly was the most bizarre method of earning three graduate credit hours I could imagine.
In Subculture Theory many theorists were interested in explaining delinquent gangs, which were believed to be the most common form of delinquency. The Subculture Theory was made up of several different theories that were all related to each other. Subculture theories provided explanations of how groups of individuals develop similar values and rationales for behavior (Williams & McKay, 2014). One theory within Subculture Theory was called the delinquent subculture theory by Albert Cohen. Another theory in the Subculture Theory was the differential opportunity formed by Richard Cloward and Lloyd Ohlin. The third theory by Walter Miller used direct observation of social groups in their natural setting. All four theories were interest in of the Subculture Theory could develop (Williams & Mckay, 2014). The last major theory was very different theories and was created by Wolfgang and Ferracuti. All these theories in the Subculture Theory were very different but were all related in some way.
This would imply that a subculture is a subdivision of a national culture; it exists between the parameters of certain cultures. TalcottParsons saw youth subcultures usually havin... ... middle of paper ... ... theirs. Both of these groups have a very specific and useful function in a society.
Bodybuilding still gave them a sense of empowerment that not only influence them to compete but also affect other aspects of their lives. For example, empowerment was a critical factor in enabling women to see they had the ability to change and shape their individual worlds. In the midst of social constraint, female bodybuilder exert control over their lives through the conscious decision of becoming bodybuilder through shaping and changing their bodies. Female body building become a form of agency. And through that they develop the strengths to try out other things in life. In this study, just like the other one many competitors reported a feeling in self- worth. Competitors also reported feeling more confident too. However, with anything there are both benefits and costs to do what you love and in this study it took note to how the cost of being a bodybuilder can affect your physical and mental
A subculture is a cultural group within a culture that differs in one or more ways from the culture. This would include differences in interest, beliefs, like religion, ethnicity, and social or economic status.
Metal who has been in the subculture for 15+ years mention a lot of the culture is word of mouth. He added that even though social media is aiding the process that it is still a problem. I found this interesting because this connected the breaking subculture with a lot of minority traditions. Word of mouth is how the slaves let each other know when Harriet Tubman was coming. Also, word of mouth, as well as teaching, is how generations of latinos continue to keep ties with their mother country even after living in America for so long.
Celebrity-athletes like Arnold Schwarzenegger unleashed the caged world of fitness from the elite few to the general public. Before the 1970s, physical fitness was closely related to bodybuilders and athletes, but certain athletes were able to break down the barriers that separated the sports industry from the media entertainment industry. Such an athlete was Austrian-born bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger started his bodybuilding career in the late 1960s, a time where it was considered that only the lower class admired extreme muscularity in men (Sailer). Here, Schwarzenegger redefined the level of competition in bodybuilding with his tall physique anchored with large aesthetic muscles, but then also surprised the world by crossing over to the movie industry. Even with his thick Austrian accent, Schwarzenegger had made himself the biggest movie star in Hollywood by the late 1980’s and reinvented masculinity in his own “bulging, bru...

...You need to be hydrated to keep your body going and just to keep your body healthy. Steroids will enhance your body up to three times the size you started. Steroids sometimes will cause swelling in your brain and leave you with a severe high blood pressure. They will leave some people excessively aggressive or suicidal. “Using steroids for building muscles is not only wrong but is illegal.’’ (V.M. Katoch). Non-competitive body building is very healthy because all of the nutrients and healthy diets they put themselves on to accomplish their goal. “Look at all the diets that just banish and eliminate and demonize entire food groups, or they starve you with 1000, or 800 or 600 calories a day, or they restrict you to nothing but lemon water or vegetable juice. That kind of dieting is unhealthy.” (Venuto Tom). Body building is overall not healthy for you and your body.
