Student Nursing Reflection

Tuesday, September 22nd: Today I was back into the role of student nurse and had two patients. These patients both required a lot of attention. One patient was a special XXX case, and the other was a former nurse. We started late because the float nurse and night nurse didn’t finish report until 8:00am. Both my patient had medications due from 7:00-8:00, so I was already behind to start. I spent all day trying to catch up with giving medications, getting assessments, and charting. This day would not have been possible without help from Luke, the student leader. I was able to work on learning outcome five dealing with leadership and management, by delegating tasks that I needed help with to the student leaders. This week I demonstrated a greater sense of assertiveness when asking for help with tasks, while maintaining a pleasant, and grateful attitude. A big lesson for me to learn was the responsibility of checking up on someone you have asked to do a task to see if they have completed it well. We have learned about this in leadership and management class. When you delegate a task, you must always follow up to make sure it was done correctly because you are still responsible for that task. The goal to have both shift assessments completed by 10:00 was complicated due to the late start. I will keep this goal as something I would like to work on next week. The goal to remember to document both patient and medications for both patients was met this week. I even tried to scan the free water! My patient’s did not meet the goal for discharge because neither patient was ready to be discharged to home yet. My patients definitely meet the goal for verbalizing when they needed something. One of my patients ambulated around the room, and the other was not quite ready to do that because of the left sided
