To determine the impact of planning on the success of an organisation, a thorough investigation of the aspects of planning is required. Strategic management, goal setting, the organisation’s internal and external environments, and environmental scanning influence planning, and the impacts of planning are exaggerated through entrepreneurship.
Strategic management is applicable in most industries and organisations, and results in extensive planning (Nag, Hambrick & Chen, 2007). It can be defined as managerial decisions to improve an organisation’s performance, with available resources, in relation to its external environment (Nag, Hambrick & Chen, 2007; Robbins et al. 2013). Strategic management and planning has many benefits, particularly improved performance (Nag, Hambrick & Chen, 2007). Firstly, it assists managers in organising and integrating each section of the company (Miller & Cardinal, 1994). Secondly, strategic management allows different sections of an organisation to cohesively accomplish set goals (Robbins et al. 2013). Finally, as Armstrong (cited in Miller & Cardinal, 1994) discusses, planning allows companies to effectively organise information, particularly in response to their external environment. This is evident in organisations with expensive equipment, as they require extensive strategic management and planning, to determine if expected revenue outweighs initial purchase costs (Miller & Cardinal, 1994). On the other hand, many researchers believe that strategic management is unhelpful as it is unproductive and futile, as well as being too strict and inflexible (Miller & Cardinal, 1994). The level of success of an entrepreneurial venture is often a reflection of the suitability and degree of planning exercised by the manager or entrepreneur of the venture. Overall, entrepreneurial ventures provide an excellent demonstration of the need for planning in order to succeed, as well as the consequences of planning if not conducted appropriately.
In conclusion, planning has a very large and significant impact on the success of an organisation, and this is evident though investigating strategic management, goal setting, the organisations internal and external environment, environmental scanning, and also entrepreneurship. Hence, it can be concluded that in almost all scenarios, organisations that fail to plan are planning to fail.
