When I first saw this title, I thought that it was simply just about a person who had experienced a very eventful hour. Although this title is very simple, it does not predict what is going to happen or have any clues or a double meaning, which I think is really cool. After reading this short story, it is exactly what I thought it was. It was a lady, Mrs. Louise Mallard, who had the most eventful hour of any one's life. From the beginning, Mrs. Mallard is sitting in her living room when her sister, Josephine comes in and tells her the horrible news of her husband's death. Mallard had died in it. Obviously, after hearing the news of her husband's death Louise was grieving, and she cried uncontrollably. But, then something changed in her mind. She thought to herself, now that he is dead, she can truly be free from the oppression that he gave her. After hearing this she began thinking about freedom, and she whispered to herself “free, free, free” (Pg. 278, 279). Her sister then comes into the room and tells her “open the door--- you will make yourself ill.” (Pg. 279), and she is afraid that she will hurt herself. So, Mrs. Mallard finally came out of her room, hugged her sister, and went downstairs with her sister and Richards. Then, the twist in the story comes. They hear the key turning in the front door and Mr. Mallard walks in the door. He was not on the train that he was always on, so he did not die, and it was only speculation from Richards that he had died. There are only four mentionable characters, Mrs. Louise Mallard, who is the main character of the short story. She has a weak heart and had her husband presumably die, but then she was secretly glad that he had died. The next character is Josephine, she is Mrs. Mallard's sister who broke the news of Mr. Mallard dying to her sister. There is also Richards, he was the first person to learn of Mr. Mallard's death over a telegram, he also told Josephine, who then told Mrs. Mallard. And lastly, the final character is Mr. Mallard, the man presumed to be dead. He only appears in the home at the last second of the story and his wife dies because of the shock of seeing her husband. The setting in this story is very small and simple, it is all told in one home, and based on context clues I would assume that this story is based in the mid to late 1800s. This story also only takes about one hour for the story to happen. This author lived in the 1800s, and this story was written in 1894. So, the author uses some older style language, which is more proper. She also has a more proper writing style, which was how people usually wrote back
In chapter one we are introduced to our narrator, Ponyboy. Ponyboy is raised by his two older brothers Darry and Soda. They’re all apart of a gang called the “greasers” which is joined by Dally, Johnny, Two-bit, and Steve. There is another group called “ socs” which stands for socials, and everyone in that group is very wealthy. One day Ponyboy got jumped by a socs group, but luckily Darry was there to help before anything too serious happened. The first element of literature is characterization. Ponyboy is a keen observer, trying to make sense of the complexities of those around him. At the beginning of the story, he stops and spends several pages giving us brief character description on Steve, Two-Bit, Dally, and Johnny. This is also known as direct characterization. He tells us that Steve is "cocky and smart" ( Hinton 9). Two-Bit can 't stop joking around and goes to school for "kicks" (Hinton 10) rather than to learn. Dallas, he says, is "tougher, colder, meaner" ( Hinton 10) than the rest of them.
There are few characters in this story, but they all play an important part. The characters are Mrs. Mallard, Josephine, Richards, and Brently Mallard. Mrs. Mallard and Brently Mallard are married and live together in the house that the story takes place in. Josephine is Mrs. Mallard’s sister and she is the one who would break the news to her about Brently Mallards death in the railroad accident. Finally Richards who is Brently Mallards good friend, and he is the one who found out about Brently Mallards death.

When I get nervous I try to make the situation as funny as possible, if a situation is awkward I will try to make as many jokes as I can or I will just make it as easy for me as possible. When it comes to these situations I will put in as many funny things to ease the awkwardness of what I’m presenting or saying. When I presented in chemistry I added as many funny pictures and funny things so that the people would take their attention off of me and laugh so then they wouldn’t have to be looking at what im doing. When I had to give a speech about reading in the 5th grade a make a joke saying that reading is for nerds, and during the speech I purposely messed up what I was saying so the speech would be funny.
Like in many tragically true stories, it would seem Mrs. Mallard 's freedom came too late. Kate Chopin’s, “The Story of an Hour” begins by introducing Mrs. Mallard as a person afflicted with heart trouble. The story builds on this by having Mrs. Mallard’s sister Josephine and her husband Richard explain the situation in a very sensitive manner. Their efforts would prove to be in vain however as Mrs. Mallard then proceeds to emotionally break down. The news shocks Mrs. Mallard to her very core and has her at odds with how she should feel now that all was said and done. After coming to terms with her situation, fate delivers its final blow in a cruel and deceitful ploy towards Mrs. Mallards. And with that, Mrs. Mallard 's dies. In her hour of change Mrs. Mallard 's was delicate, thoughtful and excitable.
The story is very short, but every word has import in the story and each line has great depth of meaning. It is possible to infer a great deal about the woman's life, even though we are given very little on the surface. A telegraph and a railroad are mentioned in the first paragraph, so there is some idea of the time the story takes place. We are also given her married name and the full name of her husband. The fact that she is referred to only as "Mrs. Mallard", while her husband's full name is given, coupled with what we learn on the second page, gives some indication of the repression she's had to suffer through and the indignity society placed on woman in those times. We also learn in the first paragraph that she lives in a man's world, for, though it is her sister that tells her the news, it is her husband's friend who rushes over with the story. Even after his death, she is confined to the structures she adopted with married life, including the close friend's of her husband.
If, in today's world, a teenage girl was told that her future had been decided a long time ago, she would probably not take the matter lightly. During the early twentieth century though it was quite different. In a time bent on the notion that when a woman reached a certain age, she should be married, Kate Chopin's 'The Story of an Hour'; brings a different idea to a world that was not close to changing anytime soon. Her story brings light to a fact that is fairly accepted by today's society, but was shunned during her time. Life before this time demanded that women should get married due to necessity. Most of America was still rural and women were needed to do certain task on the farm. When industrialization came along though, things became simpler, cities grew, and there were more choices for people to do. Women were not tied down on the farm any more. Her story shows one woman's chance to be what she wanted to be and not be looked down upon in her society. Chopin gives light on women having more freedom to do what they wanted to do in regards to marriage.
Mostly on every story, a person, place, or even an object can be described or represented more than what it actually really is. It’s just trying explain more than what the author is trying to get across the story, but it also makes you think twice about what it’s trying to say to show through the main idea. There is all sorts of symbols like the multiply sign is used to show that they double the number of what they’re trying to solve. Colors may also be used to show symbolism like they can make you label certain things and it symbolizes the object you labeled with the color.

If there was an award for the woman with the biggest roller coaster of emotions in one hour, it would go to Mrs. Mallard in “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin. Mrs. Mallard goes from content to devastated, to overjoyed, to shocked over her husband’s death. Although Mrs. Mallard’s emotions are running wild, “The Story of an Hour” is enjoyable, entertaining, and an attention grabber because of the character’s varied emotions, outrageous plot twist, descriptive imagery, and irony.
