The term “doping in sports” refers to the use of performance-enhancing drugs by an athlete to improve his or her performance. The reasons that doping in sports should be banned are mainly health risks, the equality of opportunity for athletes, and the exemplary effect of drug-free sports for the public. Anti-doping authorities state that using performance-enhancing drugs goes against the “spirit of sport”. Therefore, I believe all Olympians should be banned from taking performance-enhancing drugs. A serious public health issue is the abuse of medicines to enhance performance in sports. While some approved medicines have abusive potential, their attractiveness for doping is diminished by the fact that these products are well known and detection methods are available. One main type of steroid used is Anabolic steroids. Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) were first isolated, identified and synthesized in the 1950s and are now used therapeutically in medicine to induce bone growth, stimulate appetite, induce more puberty, and treat chronic wasting conditions, such as cancer and AIDS. Anabolic steroids also increase muscle mass and physical strength. They are most commonly used in sports and bodybuilding to enhance strength or physique. Known side effects may include high blood pressure and liver damage. If you are doping, little do you know what serious harms you are doing to your body. Blood doping, which includes having blood transfusions to change the way your blood carries oxygen to the rest of your body, has many health risks. These risks include an increase of heart failure, stroke, kidney damage, and high blood pressure. It can also cause problems with your blood such as infections, poisoning, overloading of your white cells are reduction of your platelet count. And on top of all that, problems with your circulatory system. Meanwhile you can’t forget about steroids! Steroids make you muscular and strong, but people often became too dependent on them. Steroids also have many side effects. Steroids can give you acne, make you bald, increase your risk of liver and cardiovascular disease, give you mood swings, make you more aggressive, and make you suicidal.
