I made a survey in English class asking my classmates about what they think when they hear the word, “Italians.” Most of my classmates answered: pizza, Italian food, Jersey Shore, slicked back hair, and that Italians are fat (Reyes Survey). These stereotypes come from the portrayal of Italians in the media. The Italians are usually found in gangster-related, family or reality shows, for example, Jersey Shore and The Sopranos. Italians in these shows are shown as being in contact with the mafia, having olive skin and dark black hair, are uneducated and flaunt their money around and that they love their pasta and pizza. A noticeable TV show is Jersey Shore. Jersey Shore is a reality show where the producers brought Italian-American people to live together for a summer in Jersey Shore, New Jersey. This show had 8 people and throughout the season, they showed their personalities and their lives. This show brought negative influences to the Italians. Due to the characters who claimed to be Italians (some were not) created stereotypes that all Italians are like them (olive skin, show-offs, uneducated, not religious, self-obsessed, Guido, loud and addicted to partying).The stereotypes in Jersey Shore are humorous and are mild. The Sopranos is another show that uses the Italian culture. The Sopranos is based on Tony Soprano, who is a mobster, trying to balance out his life between his home life and his criminal organization. The Sopranos has various of stereotypes that relate to what my classmates have said. The stereotypes in The Sopranos are: Italian men are mostly angry, semi-educated, gabagool-shoveling slobs and that Italian women are fat and beaten-down, abused victims who turn happy when their husbands buy them cars, jewelries or Italianate living rooms.
