Many groups of ethnicity are portrayed in media in either in a bad way or a good way. Hispanics are groups that are mostly portrayed in a negative way in all types of media. Many Hispanics are judged on just what they wear, where they come from, and just because they are Hispanic. In my examples that I have chosen show Hispanics that are judged just because they are Hispanic, Hispanic that is judged because he looks like a Hispanic gangster, Hispanic teens that are judged because where they lived, the stereotype that all Hispanics are immigrants, and my last example shows that not Hispanics are not showed in a negative way in media. Even though I am Hispanic myself I have never been in a situation just because I’m Hispanic. My first example is from a TV show that most people know about, “George Lopez” is a show of a Hispanic family living life on a daily basis. There are many stereotypes that are shown in this TV show. One of the episodes show George being mistaken as one of the men that work on the machines in the even though he was the manager of the factory. He was told by his new co manager to move desk because she had no idea George was the manager of the factory. She judged him because of what he was wearing and also he was a Hispanic in a factory. This TV show has a lot of stereotypes that are shown in other episodes. The movie “Crash” starring Sandra Bullock has a scene where she acts really racist towards a locksmith that was working on replacing her doors of her house that had recently been broken into. Most media shows Hispanics in a negative way but this film shows how Hispanics are shown in an Independent Drama film. All Hispanics should realize the media will never change. The media will always be the same. All my examples show that the media mostly has a negative view against Hispanics there are also some that show positive views. Hispanics are judged because of who they are, what they look like, and where they come from. Stereotypes might be funny and shouldn’t be taken offensive but that doesn’t mean that it’s right to say them or use them to make fun of people. Some Hispanics are judged and some aren’t. I’m only half Hispanic and from what I know I don’t get judged for what I am and no one should.
When you think of Hispanics, the first thing that comes to mind is, obviously a group of men mowing your lawn or an uneducated single mom with five young kids. Most people think that we, Hispanics, do not know how to speak English at all or are illegally in the United States. All Hispanics have been put into the category of the stereotypical Hispanic by Americans. We are all viewed falsely the same way uneducated, illegal, and all Mexican.
As showed in the film, Latino American often misrepresented and underrepresented both in front of and under the camera. American Hispanic often portrayed as lazy, unintelligent, greasy and criminal. Hispanic women often pictured comfortable sexuality as prostitution in film production; while Hispanic actors limit to criminal characters such as drug dealers, gangster, and provide the power for the white American. Audiences have less interaction with Latino in their real world might be easily framed by media images regarding the race and ethnicity. The lack of Hispanic history and culture understanding allows these media portrayals to change and form unfavorable behavior and attitude against Latino communities.
Puerto Ricans, just like many other ethnic groups, are victims of stereotypes and prejudices. These individuals have been labeled as lazy, submissive, etc. However, one of the main stereotypes that affects Puerto Ricans, to this day, is the one that labels them as criminals. There are many media representations that continue to identify Puerto Ricans as criminals, even though that may not be the case. Unfortunately, for many ethic groups, the media plays a major role in regards to their stereotypes. Stereotypes are a reality that we all must face in today's society. Regardless of what your ethnic background or culture may be. You have been probably been discriminated against, or treated differently, at some point in your life because of a stereotype that was long ago applied to your culture. For some, I perceive it may be worse than others. For example, all Hispanics are in this country illegally or all African Americans are criminals that cannot keep a job. We know these things are not true, but it doesn't keep some people from calling a Mexican a wetback or stop them from calling the police when they see a black man out walking at nigh,t now does it? So why do people think like this? The answer, in short, is stereotypes. In "The Myth of the Latin Woman," Judith Ortiz Cofer states that her personal goal in her public life is to "try to replace the old pervasive stereotypes and myths about Latinas with a much more interesting set of realities" (Cofer 812). By using the rhetoric appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos she causes us all to stop and think before we make assumptions based on stereotypes.
Today, the Hispanic population has grown tremendously over the years. We have watched the Hispanics community growth rate grow faster than any other racial and ethnic group in the nation. The Hispanic culture and community has populated all around the United States, introducing new traditions and customs. I was traveling to different to city in the States, I notice the wide spread growth of Hispanic communities, For Instance in Miami the Cuban and El Salvadoran culture is heavy populate in the area. In New York the Puerto Rican culture is dominating through out the several boroughs. I have come around town and Hispanics are known for their good food, which tends to have more diverse people try new cultural customs. Hispanics or Latinos are defined as a people of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish speaking cultures.

Racism appears everywhere and is playing an enormous role in society, not only to the Hispanics, but also to the African Americans. In fact, Being Latino in American society can be challenging there are many stereotypes that are said about Latinos. Not only do politicians give Latinos immigrants a bad name, but they also attempt to debase immigrants. From living in a Caucasian neighborhood, and going to a high school with five percent Hispanic. Politicians giving Hispanics a bad name, I know firsthand experience does not only affects me but everyone. Racism is an issue that was introduced to our environment through Cultural beliefs.
Consider the ethnicity that you identify as; how would you react if your culture or ancestors were not depicted correctly in the media? Sadly, all ethnicities have stereotypes that often shape the way that people view that certain race. Focusing on one ethnicity, Native Americans are viewed many different ways, depending on the person. Often times, the media is most responsible for creating movies or books that misinform the public about Native American values, culture, or history because of common stereotypes and the lack of knowledge about the history of Natives.
Many television shows realize this and try to challenge stereotypes set by their contemporaries. The popular Netflix original Orange is the New Black is a prime example of this. They involve stereotypes for all sorts of demographics, but they develop the characters further to show that there’s more to people than popular stereotypes tend to give them credit for. For example, Black Cindy starts off as a relatively stereotypical black woman, but flashbacks show her thought processes and the motives behind her actions(Kohan). It brings depth to her as a person and in sequence makes the stereotypes associated with her in the beginning of the show seem shallow. Whenever we hear or see a person of certain racial group, we automatically have an idea of how that person can be. Sometime without realizing, as a society we have some idea of how certain groups act. It is a common thing in our society on which sometimes it can create good or bad interpretations about those ethnic or racial groups. Also, it can create tolerance or intolerance toward other groups because of different ideas or traditions. The concept of stereotypes is what we have been created in our presumptions of a person without even having an idea how they are. In many circles of the world, various groups of people distinguish themselves from one another through religion, language, culture, and sometimes gender. People also develop stereotypes about a particular group of people in order to identify them. However, most of the time, these stereotypes hold true for only some members of a group. Sometimes, these stereotypes are just plain misconceptions that do not even apply to the group they claim to be. Stereotypes are placed on people because it is a way to easily identify what type of person or ethnicity an individual is.
Latinos face a lot of discrimination when they come to the united stated or they try to assimilate to the American culture. Most immigrants have to deal with the police investigating them because they think they are all drug dealers or are in some type of illegal organization. They also have to deal with people calling them names because of their skin color. Americans also accuse Hispanics of stealing their jobs (Ramos, 53). They also face seeing racist graffiti on homes or wall of a building and they have to face hate crimes (Plunkett, 15). They sometimes get excluded from white communities (Plunkett, 39). Latinos are also blamed for serious problems the country faces (Ramos, 195). There are reasons for Americans to discriminate Latinos and reasons why they shouldn’t discriminate them.

According to the Webster's Dictionary, stereotyping is defined as a fixed conventional notion or conception of an individual or group of people, held by a number of people. Stereotypes can be basic or complex generalizations which people apply to individuals or groups based on their appearance, behaviour and beliefs. Stereotypes are found everywhere in the world. Though our world seems to be improving in many ways, it seems almost impossible to liberate it from stereotypes.
Stereotypes are a fixed image of all members of a culture, group, or race, usually based on limited and inaccurate information resulting from the minimal contact with these stereotyped groups. Stereotypes have many forms: people are stereotyped according to their religion, race, ethnicity, age, gender, color, or national origins. This kind of intolerance is focused on the easily observable characteristics of groups of people. In general, stereotypes reduce individuals to a rigid and inflexible image that doesn't account for the multi-dimensional nature of human beings. One example of stereotypes is the categorization of the Jews in the Elizabethan era.
