Across the globe, society oversimplifies each others’ identities because of race, gender, sexuality, religion, and many other characteristics they contain. These over reduced images of an intricate human classify people and may impact them more negatively than positively. When people believe a stereotype, it alters their whole entire perception of a community. This can distort the true identity of a person and cause prejudgment upon them. Similarly to many pop culture songs, these musicians tackle down important issues through their music such as mental illnesses, substance abuse, losing a loved one and more. Famous heavy metal band, Rise Against released a song after the death of Tyler Clementi called “ Make It Stop”, which discusses bullying, suicide, and homophobia. In an MTV interview, Tim Mcllrath explained that the intended purpose of this song is that, “..life does improve….you’ve just got find the strength not to give up”. Heavy metal musicians’ music can be incoherent because screams are not decipherable; however, their music can be intelligible with a clear message for their audiences. Furthermore, this screaming music genre may lead people to think that this particular genre promotes violence among their followers. On the contrary, Frontiers Media released an article by Leah Sharman called Extreme Metal Music and Anger Processing which reports that in a study of angry participants, listening to the music resulted in an increase in positive emotions. This suggests that rather than causing erratic, violent, and aggressive behavior, heavy metal musicians’ music can assist in regulating negative behaviors.
