Stephen Crane did an excellent job in expressing how appreciative a person can be in his poem "Untitled." This is quite odd that a person would title a work of art "Untitled", however, I am sure that Crane did have a reason for doing so. I believe that it is simply because the theme of this poem can be applied to any situation in life ,and he is leaving the reader in charge of what he would like to relate the poem to.
The line "but I like it because it is bitter, and because it is my heart," expresses to me the theme of the poem. Despite the situation a person should always remain grateful for what they do have. I think in the beginning, this poem is mocking the façade of happiness that many clean-cut individuals have. It is a mockery of the thoughts in the criminal mind. Many times, a criminal cannot bring himself to commit suicide, so they take someone else's life instead. By doing so, subconsciously, the criminal knows he will be caught and in turn, executed.
Overall “Thanatopsis” is one of the great works of romantic writing in America and is a work of art. Art is supposed to bring out feeling in the person observing it. This poem could not do a better job at that. Although this poem is limited to words on paper, it expresses infinity of feelings, thoughts, and emotions. When I first read this poem I did not have a gut reaction, I just didn’t understand it. But as I dove into the poem and read deeply, and I let my mind walk freely in the deep thoughts of death, nature, and comfort I truly started to understand it. I chose this poem because it represents poetry as an art form better than any poem I have ever read. Its uses of alliteration, personification, and similes truly exemplify the writer’s thoughts and feeling so that the reader reads the poem with emotion
I believe that the structure of this poem allows for the speaker to tell a narrative which further allows him to convey his point. The use of enjambment emphasizes this idea as well as provides a sense of flow throughout the entirety of a poem, giving it the look and feel of reading a story. In the novella Maggie: A Girl of the Streets and Other Short Fiction by Stephen Crane, Crane tells a story about Maggie, a girl who lives in the slums of New York City in the 1800s with her family and friends. In novella it is portrayed that Maggie desperately tries to escape the slums, however, because of Maggie’s environment and social forces, it ultimately led to her downfall and demise within society.
This line was very unexpected and this line makes the poem what it is. The poem transition from a love poem to a darker more painful story. The tone of the poem also shifts to a more eerie tone. Another thing about the third stanza is that at this moment in the poem, I can connect the poem to the Greek mythological story of Persephone and Hades. The allusion sets up the rest of the poem and gives the poem a lot more meaning.
The poet mourns the death of his loved one and wants the world to grieve with him. His wants his subjective to be objective. The first stanza links everything to noise. He wants to 'silence the piano ' for example, showing how he wants no more noise in the world. Throughout the poem, there are many imperatives. This relates back to Remember, where the poems title is included in the imperatives. The third stanza has no imperatives at all, and many antonyms. This is the poets way of saying they meant everything to him. The second stanza uses 'scribbling ' to personify a plane. The use of personification in the poem links back to Do not go gentle into that good night. The first stanza contains references to things that can be easily done like 'stop all the clocks '. The second has things that are theoretically possible but a bit harder to do. The poem seems to get less and less realistic as it goes on. The final line, 'For nothing now can ever come to any good ', is quite bleak, showing how the death of his partner has affected the poet. It gives him no good feelings
