In addition to the several years of work experience I have in biology and medical related fields at some of the most renowned organizations in the globe, I want to further my education by registering for and pursuing a graduate study in Cell and Molecular Biology at the university.
After graduating with a first class honors from the U.S. Army Medical Academy, Operating Room Branch in 1997, I felt the need to gain some practical experience to complement the knowledge I had obtained from the undergraduate program. For that reason, I decided to go to work in busy organizations to enable me to gain first-hand information concerning scientific research. I enjoyed every bit of my job, which mainly entailed working together with senior biologists in cutting-edge projects. Although I enjoyed my work, I was never pleased with the fact that I always had to take directives and orders from my seniors. I consequently developed the interest of wanting to be part of the team that gives directives in projects. This encouraged me to pursue a graduate study in my field of interest.
My interest in biology developed way back in high school where we had a very hardworking and passionate teacher who took us to education field trips where we would engage in practical learning. He led us through many practical lessons and diligently organized and demonstrated several interesting experiments; however, by that time I did not have any idea on how to conduct such practical sessions. He also explained interesting topics such as reproduction, cell biology, and the theory of evolution. ...o secure a good job in the current highly competitive and challenging job market. Nowadays, most jobs demand that applicants should have advanced degrees in their fields of study. With a graduate degree in my field of interest, I will be increasing my chances of meeting the requirements expected by the relevant organizations in my field of study.
Lastly, a graduate degree will increase my chances of making more money in terms of salary at my place of work. Apart from experience, the only other factor that determines what an individual earns at his place of work is his level of education. People with graduate degree are more useful to the organization; as a result, they are entitled to a higher pay. Graduates are allowed to negotiate their pay during job interviews and end up with a fair amount of salary that matches their skills, knowledge, and education background.
Pursuing a higher education is a way of bettering yourself for the world. By bettering yourself, you can impact and change the lives of others, helping with education and being involved in the quality in which others learn to live. Higher education can help to create a work environment that will impact you and your family. Better education also means better wages to extend the value of your education by increasing your yearly income.
College provides a foundation of knowledge. This foundation will allow them to apply basic theories in the work place. This knowledge can be expanded upon as they work and continue to learn on the job. An employer can then mold a graduate to move up through a company. Again, its back to a graduate being willing to learn. They have to be willing to learn about a company, its brand identity, and where the company is heading.
An important aspect of my overarching goal for college is to garner an abundance of real world experiences. Through the opportunities provided by the Honors College, I know that I will not have any trouble doing so. Having previously worked with metabolic diseases and cancer, I hope to continue my research in these fields by using the opportunities at this premier research university. Through the VCU Medical Center and programs like UROP, I desire to collaborate with professors and faculty members to discover more about human diseases. A particular program at the Honors College that interests me is the Freshman Research
By studying an undergraduate degree, it will allow me to stand out from the rest of the people that don’t have education up to degree level and this would help when applying for jobs. This would show employers that I have more to offer to the business as I would have a degree and hands on experience, but this is only if I have done a placement year.
Getting a college degree is one of the most important things someone will ever receive and accomplish in their whole entire lifetime(Lynn). With a college degree, there is a lot more to explore for a career(McCabe). On average, a college graduate with a bachelor’s degree earned $30,000 more per year than a high school graduate, or about $500,000 more over a lifetime. Since 2013, more and more jobs are requiring some kind of college degree to be accepted to work there(“ProCon”). Another advantage is; it will open a lot more doors. A lot more opportunities will become available(Pennell).
Learning is a continuous process and the day that you stop learning is the day that you start decreasing your rewards and lower levels of satisfaction. My ardent desire to acquire knowledge has motivated me to pursue higher studies at graduate level, and to take up a career in research in industry. I have taken this decision after carefully considering my academic background, profound interest in research and strong aptitude for problem solving.
A graduate has a better chance at getting what ever they want and employers are more than willing to even hire students part time while they attend college. They are even willing to pick up the bill for college (Schwartz). When you do not finish college and go right for the experience, you are placing a cap to how far you can go. The workers skills are not as well defined as the graduates. With that degree, you have the opportunity for career advancement and you are paving the way for career advancement through specific training (Keefe).

Having a degree, demonstrates that you have perseverance, the ability to set a long term goal, and through hard work and dedication accomplish the goal. It also exhibits your willingness and ability to learn and can validate your ability to master the requirements of the position.
