I work for Lane Bryant as a part time sales lead, which is a management position. I am currently a temporary full time lead while a coworker is on leave. Lane Bryant is a women’s clothing store that was originally founded by Lena Bryant in 1904, and the chain has grown since then to over 800 stores. The store I work for is in the Top 100 stores in the company. In the past three years, the store has increased sales by over 20%.
Four years ago, I heard of a job opening at Lane Bryant. I was 20, and had not yet begun my college degree. I put in an application, and was interviewed for an associate position. I feel as if I can apply what I have learned in my classes to my job. This helps me to better grasp what I have been taught. My classes have also helped me to grow at work. After learning about persuasive selling techniques, I was able to grow my credit selling techniques. This has helped me to become the top credit selling at my store. I am also able to help those struggling, and teach them how to improve selling techniques. It fits perfectly with the multidisciplinary degree. I am able to view situations through several different viewpoints. I can apply different ideas and think about which one works best.
I think that employers prefer to hire college graduates because they are willing to learn. A willingness to learn shows initiative. It shows that they will be able to learn on the job as well. As a college graduate, a person can be seen as go getter. Someone who is willing to better themselves, and adapt to different situations.
College provides a foundation of knowledge. This foundation will allow them to apply basic theories in the work place. This knowledge can be expanded upon as they work and continue to learn on the job. An employer can then mold a graduate to move up through a company. Again, its back to a graduate being willing to learn. They have to be willing to learn about a company, its brand identity, and where the company is heading.
College graduates also provide add provide new creative outlooks. They probably haven’t worked in their desired industry that much. They aren’t afraid to take a risk because they haven’t seen as much failure. Others may not be willing to take risks. Sometimes big risks have big
