The influence of higher education on police officer habits would surprise many according to Matthew D. Bostrom, D.P.A of the Saint Paul Police Department in “Police Chief Magazine-The Professional Voice of Law Enforcement”. Although a degree is required for some agencies and considered ideal for any person looking to join the law enforcement field, surveys show otherwise says Bostrom. According to a study conducted in St. Paul, Minnesota there were more on-duty vehicle collisions by officers with formal education beyond high school than those who only obtained a high school diploma. The article also shows figures indicating more disciplinary actions towards officers with college degrees and a significant difference in those of officers with high school diplomas only. The measurements of work habits shown indicate that perhaps a college degree in general is not necessary to be an effective police officer. Traffic Officer James Dunn of the California Highway Patrol in an interview said, “a degree can be beneficial, but some people are very eloquent and knowledgeable even without attending college-a person can learn the specific duties of any job, but college does not teach you the responsibilities of being a police officer. You learn that by hands-on training”. Although a degree is helpful, Officer Dunn admits that he has been very successful in the law
I chose to do my ride along with the Lexington Police Department. The police officer that I got to ride along with was Officer Ernesti. Officer Ernesti has an associates degree in criminal justice. After high school he attended Southeast Community College in Lincoln. He says that he wished he chose a different field to study. The reason is was because he got in a fight with a suspect and injured his arm. He was afraid that he did something severe to his arm that he would not be able to perform any police duty. If he would have had a different degree he could have fallen back to something that does not relate to criminal justice. Before getting hired by the Lexington Police Department in January of 2014 he worked in Gosper County for two years. During his time at Gosper County he was a K-9 handler.
The Criminal Justice System is composed of several different fields that include institutions, practices, and systems in which the government mitigates and serves the community by providing safety and security by controlling crimes. As a Deputy Probation Officer in the Criminal Justice System one will be supervising probationers who have been convicted of crimes and sentenced to probation. A Deputy Probation Officer's role requires a great level of compassion, patience, and energy, all while teaching responsibility for necessary life skills. These life skills include communicating, self-control, critical thinking, and problem solving. One must be able to communicate effectively, challenge, and motivate the probationer by teaching a positive way of conduct and how to make better choices in life. The Officer is also responsible providing the offender with the necessary tools for job training, coordinating rehabilitation services, substance abuse counseling, mental health, and other life coping skills.
Parole Officer I am writing about being a parole officer. I am giving information on them. My mom was on probation so I have had my experiences with probation and how it could affect one’s life. They focus on keeping people that were in jail under control, when they get out.
I plan to graduate from Ft. Hays in 3 years with my Bachelors of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. At that point, I would like to settle down in Portland, Maine. I went there last summer with my Grandparents and loved everything about it. Especially the weather and all the cool lighthouses.
To be able to finish my associates degree I must complete my one online class through Waubonsee Community College, as this is the last course that I need to finish my degree. To accomplish my bachelor’s degree, I have a year and a half of school left that I would need to finish before I am eligible for a degree. To test at most police departments, I must be at least 21 and have almost completed my degree. I will be 21 in June of 2017 of I will be graduating in spring of 2018, for the police testing also I will need to prepare myself for the physical fitness test. Finally taking into consideration a master’s degree, to be hired as a police officer I do not need one but to receive certain promotions I will need this degree. Currently I have not considered any schools for this however I would like to try and receive this degree in a master of arts in criminal justice or public administration. Once I have achieved all of these goals I hope to be primarily done with undergraduate school considering graduate schools and hopefully looking at what job offers to accept from law enforcement
Growing up in a country where girls are constantly advised to be doctors, nurses, educators, and any other profession except law enforcement motivated me even further in accomplishing just that. Even as a little girl I simply could not ignore the violence, corruption, and inequality that affected my country; I wanted to fight the violence that brought misery to many, and bring justice to those who desperately deserved it. My goals of pursuing a career in criminal justice were constantly struck down and criticized throughout the years. However, once an impossible dream became a reality when I immigrated to the United States, the land of opportunity. Though my hope was restored, living and adapting to an unfamiliar environment with no family or support proved to be yet another obstacle. Witnessing my parents struggle to adapt, feeling helpless, and confused to provide us a better life has been an immense source of inspiration that drives me to seize every opportunity as it were my last.

If I was to become a probation officer, one thing I would want to be is efficient, and successful. There would be several things I would try to focalize my attention on; supervision in communities, and its importance. Probation officers have very complex, and hard job; but if done with the right intentions, and the will to help people you can help change people’s lives.
This goal is important to me because I would be the first police officer in my family and that I would be a woman in a male-dominated field and I want to change how people view of police officers. One person that I can attribute my decision to become a police officer is my public safety teacher from high school. He was a worked for the St Cloud police department for thirty-five years and was the captain before he retired and became a teacher. I would always go to him with questions about being a police officer and what are some of the things they faced and he always answered me honestly and would give me advice from an impartial standpoint, not from someone that was trying to advocate to become a police officer. We would have conversations where sometimes he would be advising me to not become an officer and sometimes he would say to go for it but he always reminded me that to get through being a police officer it was always going to depend on the mindset you have towards the job and the people. You can go into the job thinking everyone is a criminal but you can’t think that everyone is good either. Also he told me that even if you did good people will always hate you which really bothered me since their sole purpose is to protect and serve the people and made me determined to become one because I wanted to be one of the good ones and help to change that idea in the community I would be
I am a first generation Portuguese-Canadian woman who was raised in a Roman Catholic community; divided between traditional beliefs and progressive millennial mindsets. My upbringing has cultivated adaptability, creativity, and a genuine curiosity for human behaviours. I have a passion for learning and view a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy as a rewarding academic and vocational endeavor.
Learning is a continuous process and the day that you stop learning is the day that you start decreasing your rewards and lower levels of satisfaction. My ardent desire to acquire knowledge has motivated me to pursue higher studies at graduate level, and to take up a career in research in industry. As a military policeman my Army training continued but now included police specific topics. Lots of judo and hand-to-hand combat plus additional firearms training, pistol, rifle to machine gun and I was awarded the “high score” trophy during the .45 caliber pistol qualifications. As a policeman I was assigned to attend the POST academy course in education and training required by the State with some additional specific training required due to the social unrest that really ramped up while I was a civilian policeman. As you’ll see my training continued through my police department years, right up to the year I retired. Much of these training subjects were district specific in that they provided me with additional knowledge that assisted me in the different locations of my assignments; such as Desert Training and Snow Safety Awareness and just as important I was updated with changes in technology; such as Revolver conversion to Semi-Auto Pistol Training. In some areas I was an instructor for some of these subjects which I volunteered to do realizing that as a trained instructor I became more knowledgeable with the subject matter which greatly added to my own confidence as my career
I develop and deliver technical solutions to collection of applications used by retail giants across the globe. My responsibilities have given me scenarios to put on my problem solving and interpersonal skills in real life situations.
