As I began my older adolescence years, I took my American Sign Language as my Foreign language credit. After taking this course for 3 years, I thought about the possibility of pursuing a career as an American Sign Language Interpreter. There are three reasons why I chose to pursue this undergraduate degree. The first reason is, I am good at learning languages. Secondly, American Sign Language became a passion of mine. Thirdly, there is a low supply and a high demand for American Sign Language Interpreters. Communication is an important aspect of human nature. To be able to communicate, one must be able to speak another person’s language. In order for me to become a National Certified Interpreter, I must obtain a Bachelor’s degree to pursue this profession. Without a Bachelor’s degree, I cannot apply with RID, and will be denied from taking the test as it is a requirement in order to take the National Certification. At the current moment, I am pursuing a degree for an Associates of Science in American Sign Language and English Interpreting with Tidewater Community College as a stepping stone to transferring to a Bachelor’s degree. Receiving this undergraduate degree will allow me to build my ASL and English skills, enhance my interpreting skills, as well as qualify me for consideration to take the National Certification Test as set me down the path to becoming a professional interpreter for the Deaf.
Furthermore, communication is of the utmost importance when two people communicate with one another. Accurate communication can be lost in translation because of miss-understandings. This undergraduate degree will train me to perform accurate interpretation of communication and prepare me to perform translation analyses, identify the message being conveyed, and find equivalent meanings from the source language to the target language.
