As stated within the text, it is important to determine the way you want to communicate a message. You have to decide whether conveying your message is easier to do through writing or if through verbal communication. Sometimes, a person needs to do both as messages can get construed if not delivered in the correct manner. In relation to the State of the Union speech, it is a time where the President defines the problems at hand and figures out his plan of how to answer the questions that people have about the problems, gaging it towards the audience that it pertains to. In chapter 2, it discusses how to make the planning process more manageable and five steps to follow, which break up the process into smaller, sometimes easier, sections. The five steps are, determining goals, analyzing your audience, gathering information, analyzing and organizing the information, and choosing the form, channel, and format the document will take (McGraw-Hill 23). It is one of those speeches that is both written with high-importance and told to the American people with confidence, as it seeks to give resolutions to a problem and give the American people hope in their country, especially now. This past week, President Trump gave his first State of the Union speech to the American people. While I did not get to watch the whole speech, I was able to read coverage about it. The audience President Trump tried to gage was the middle and working class, he definitely seemed to be pointing in that direction. President Trump did not bungle nor have confusion with his speech. He did not mess up on words and seemed genuinely focused on the task at hand.
