Standard 3 reflection This standard was very informative and I am starting to gain a better grasp of what being a principal would entail. This standard had a lot of areas that I was unfamiliar with and allowed me a chance to gain some insight into a principal’s roles. I will say that before this program, I found data to be an overwhelming concept to interpret and develop strategies for schools. However, the third SARS that was completed and I found that it is becoming easier and easier to see that data trends. We are doing formative writing assessments for the second year at Wahlert and I have been spending time with that data to figure out what my sophomore students need to work on in regards to writing skills. This standard was about the role of an administrator in the management of a school and we got a lot of great information on that topic. The toolboxes helped me focus on different management pieces and the role that the principal can have and how some of the management pieces get delegated. The job title of a principal can be very different from school to school depending on how the system is set up. On one hand I have the principal mentor who is in a small school and does a lot of daily management of resources, repairs, and time. He is constantly having to do things himself because that is how that school is set up to run. The other side of the coin is my principal who has a large building in a larger school system and a lot of the day to day management pieces can be placed on others shoulders. There is a head of buildings and grounds in the building who takes care of that piece with input from him. Thus he is not always burden by that management piece. The discussions we had in class on all the different things that were happening in the Cedar Rapids schools was really good and would have loved a good chunk of time on that. The concept of standards-based grading is one that intrigues me and would love to develop further. The previous standard I did some research into it and have found that I like the principles behind it. There is a definite understanding by me that this is a process that will take some time to get a handle and develop into a school. The Early Childhood and Pre-K component was very interesting to me because I had absolutely no background knowledge in it. I learned a lot about the evaluation process and the amount of work that goes into it with its current form. I at least feel that I could help those teachers find some creative time management to help them complete that piece but would still like to see how elementary schools do scheduling. School safety and law were both great presentations and I learned a lot of valuable information and resources to help me grow as a principal. Knowing who to get a hold of within the context of school legal issues and knowing that there is support eases my mind on this topic. The issue of school safety is frightening in this day and age and there seems to be so many things that are going on in schools. I look again at Cedar Rapids and the
