The religion of Islam has spread across many regions of the world, accumulating over 1.6 billion followers, or 23% of the global population. The followers of Islam are referred to as Muslims, which means ‘to submit’ in Arabic. Muslims submit to their God, Allah. Muslims have spread their religion, Islam, to over 45 countries, most of which being located along the Arabian Peninsula. Islam, like many other religions, can be connected and traced along to Abraham. Muslims believe they are all descendants of Abraham’s exiled son, Ishmael. Islam is based on faith, respect, and equality, but many people believe this religion is based on cruelty and destruction, and practiced by terrorists. By the age of six, Muhammad had lost both his parents. Muhammad’s father passed away soon before his only son’s birth. Muhammad's mother fell ill on the trip from Yathrib back to Mecca, when Muhammad was six years old. Muhammad was passed into the care of his Uncle, Abu Talib, by age eight. As a young boy, Muhammad worked as a shepherd to pay off his keep. In his early twenties, Muhammad began acting as a caravan agent for a wealthy female Meccan merchant, Khadija. By 595 AD, Khadija had proposed to marry Muhammad. Muhammad and Khadija had brought six children into the world, but only one survived into adulthood. These two books are named the Sunna and the Qur’an. Both of the Holy books of Islam are written in Arabic, the main language of Islam. The Qur’an provides information on how to live daily life and a list of five main rules to follow. The Five Pillars are the five most basic rules of Islam, and all are named in Arabic: shahada, zakat, salat, sawm, and hajj. Shahada is the meaning of ‘profession of faith’ in Arabic, stating that there is only one god, and Muhammad is his prophet. Zakat is the act in which all Muslims must give up either 2.5% of their income or 1/40 of their possessions annually to charity. Salat, meaning daily worship, states that all Muslims must pray five times every day, facing in the direction of the holy Kaaba. Sawm, a fasting, states that a Muslim will not eat from sunrise to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan. Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca, states that every Muslim must take on a trip to Mecca once in their lifetime to visit the Kaaba. The Qur’an includes specific rules on how Muslims are supposed to live their everyday lives, regarding diet, prayer, courteousness, charity, respect for parents, and forgiveness.
