“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before” (Roddenberry, 1966). Undoubtedly many are familiar with this quotation, the monologue for the television show Star Trek. Although the adventures of Captain Kirk and his crew may be unrealistic and unlikely, these words have become a source of inspiration. The space program also has somewhat similar goals. Since it began, it has sought to explore and to understand non-terrestrial matters. The space program symbolizes the hopes and dreams of many. Not only does it foster curiosity, but it also provides a way for us to explore. After the moon, we wanted to go further. Satellites were built and launched to capture images of the planets, nebulas, and even more. Programs such as ALMA are working to find more about black holes.
NASA is currently working on its 2020 mission to Mars, and developing more plans for manned missions. Private space exploration companies are working to build less expensive shuttles to the ISS and further. The development of space taxis may make it a possibility for common people to visit space. These are just some of the space explorations in our solar system, not to mention other galaxies. There is a multitude of discoveries to be made. I often look at the sky at night in awe, thinking about all of the things that are in space, and what could be there. I consider the thought that one day, there may be manned missions outside of our galaxy. Space itself is such an underrated term, meaning an empty expanse. Although it is a cold vacuum, I would hardly say that it is empty, filled with planets, moons, stars, and more. I hope that one day I will be able to see them for myself, or help other astronauts to do
