Disney’s The Little Mermaid was performed on broadway, and there are many songs that are on the album. From all 29 songs on the album, Beyond My Wildest Dreams is the song that I analyzed. This song is about Ariel finally getting to be on land, but what she is singing is what is going on in her mind. The song’s purpose is to inform the audience what she is thinking about everything, but it also to show what everyone else thinks of her based on their observations. The female vocalists and Grimsby don’t understand why she can’t talk, so they think she’s crazy and obsessive. The song starts off with Ariel explaining what it’s like to be on land. Opening the song with a bright—not overpowering—note is the hook of the song. Personally, it was intriguing because it wasn’t a heavy opening sound. The next 10 measures are in cut time, but they still have a fluid, light feel to them. Then there’s a tempo change. Switching up the tempo can change the mood, so some composers have to be careful when they do that. However, it works in a great way in this arrangement. The composer wrote the song to tell a story, so switching the tempo to something with a different feel lets the listeners know that something else is going to happen musically. I love how the vocalists are able to set themselves apart from others so there isn’t the same kind of voice the whole time. However, I do wish there were more dynamics. Even though this is an energetic song, some parts could be softer. For example, she sings about seeing Prince Eric. That should be softer and sweeter because she’s totally in love with this guy. I did enjoy the way the vocalist put in the little screams and squeaks in there because it showed her excitement through a recording. I wish there would have been a little more to the melody.
