Sociological mindfulness is not something we, as humans, think about on a daily basis. In order to be mindful of something one needs to be able to look deeper. There are several different reason as to why we wish not to indulge on this. We are brought up in a society that predicts what we are meant to think and how we act. However, in order to be socially mindful we need to rid ourselves of these suggestions and see the unique values in not only the people but in their situation. If we are to practice sociological mindfulness, we are then allowing ourselves to not only see how the world is socially constructed, but also how we invent ways to decide what is real and true. The ideas of school, churches, government, and families were made up to form order. These ideas have made the social world durable and strong. Money and diplomas are all based upon ideas. Money, just like diplomas is just paper, yet they control our lives. What really do these sheets of paper mean? A diploma in no way measures the intellectual capabilities of an individual, just as money does not reflect the success of another. People hold tightly to the ideas that give them a sense of right and wrong and see them as everlasting and unchanging. As Schwalbe said in his book The Socially Examined Life, “To the people in it, a society thus will seem solid and real, for as long as it lasts." Cultural habit is so integrated into the minds of people today that rarely do we realize what we are doing. In our society we are split into groups, either it be race, gender, etc. however these are groups that long ago were instated. Race is a social reality, but it is one that we choose to act on. Instead of splitting people into groups based on the pigment of their skin, we could split into hair or eye color. Gender is also assumed. When a baby is born, society decides right then and there if they are a boy or a girl. Genitalia does not determine what gender a person will be. Society does. If a baby is born with a penis he is raised playing with truck and cars and it discriminated if in the least bit acts with any feminine
