Societies Judgment on Limited English Proficiency Society judges civilians based on looks, social status, class and many other ways. One way society places judgment on civilians is by criticizing how they speak or write. This judgment has consequences on individuals who have not mastered the English language, such as limited opportunities and being socially awkward. In “Mother Tongue,” Amy Tan discusses the struggles of speaking “Broken” English, consequently leading to judgment. Individuals sometimes get judged for his/her writing skills. Some individual’s skills are not as developed as others for many different reasons. In high school, a student whose English skills are not developed can have a peer review his/her paper and will be mocked due to the flaws in the sentence structure. Students can criticize that specific student whose sentence structure is wrong, as being illiterate and somehow less than others. Also, the test scores affect student’s image on how he/she perceives his/herself. On the other hand, because of limited English skills, personages can either be bullied or be a bully because of perceiving oneself as limited or less, hence societies influence on a populace. In “Mother Tongue,” Amy Tan states: “…answers on English tests were always a judgment call, a matter of opinion…” In this quote Amy is explaining how she discerns that test scores did not measure her true potential. It is not only the writing skills that society judges a populace, but also on how well individuals speech is. Society will quickly make judgments about illiteracy and sometimes even cruder comments such as, “retarded” or “idiot” if an individual’s speech is not up to par. Also, individual’s will often use stereotypical remarks such as, “I... ... middle of paper ... ...nd conversations just because he/she is forming sentences incorrectly. Some individuals who speak with broken English can actually comprehend a lot more than some might think, therefore broken English doesn’t make an individual any less of a human being. Therefore, having limited English skills in speech or writing can have a short or long term effect on an individual’s self-esteem and opportunities. Judgment should not be placed nor should one’s worth or potential be judged based off of test scores or stereotypical sayings. Society plays a major role in what its citizens of today think of each other. Therefore, it is up to society to educate individuals who place judgment on those who have limited English skills. Individual’s with limited and temporary ability to speak or write, should not measure that individuals potential in life nor limit his/her opportunities.
