Socialization and Deafness When individuals have severe to profound hearing loss they are known as being deaf. This is the worse type of hearing loss, and causes the individual to be unable to understand conversational speech by hearing. (Falvo, 2014, p. 276). Every aspect of the individual’s life is affected by deafness. Humans use speech and hearing to communicate in their everyday life. One major aspect of an individual’s life that is affected by deafness is their social life and community involvement. Wie, Pripp, and Tvete (2010) stated that individuals that suffer from deafness experience higher stress levels and have a feeling of exclusion when they are in social settings (p. 772). This is very hard for deaf individual’s because they have difficulty keeping up with conversations in group settings. Also, not many people know sign language, which severely limits how the deaf individuals and regular hearing people can communicate (Falvo, 2014, p. 295). The study done by Wie, Pripp, and Tvete (2010) showed very astounding statistics about deaf individuals. It showed that 93% of deaf individuals see their condition as a communication handicap which has a negative effect on their interactions with others (p. 777). Also, the study showed that deafness affected the individual’s overall performance, interactions with others, and sense of well-being (Wie, Pripp, & Tvete, 2010, p. 777). Most social environments and community involvement opportunities, have multiple speakers and a lot of background distractions (Wie, Pripp, & Tvete, 2010, p. 779). This is hard on deaf individuals, because they need to be able to read the speaker’s lips and have all their attention only on one speaker. With there being more than one speaker, it is hard for the individual to learn the speaker’s lip movements, and the background distractions make it difficult to concentrate on what is being said.
