I believe that it is important to have an open mindset to other cultures and the way they view the world and live their lives to be a strong advocate and social worker. I also believe that the best way to learn about different cultures, including their history and their life styles, would be to immerse yourself directly into that culture and see it from their perspective. This study abroad program was able to open many doors for me as I progress in the field of social work. My direct focus in social work is in different fields of international studies, and I have been able to broaden my own horizons and mindset through this experience. During that time, I was able to use my skills from previous internships and classroom knowledge to work in the community and with the boys in the shelter. Working with the Madras Christian College students who went to the community with me helped answer many questions on the difference of social work in India verse the United States. I was able to learn how different societies may have different standards for work, and may take a less standardized approach to the practice. The field in India was lacking structure. We did not have a direct supervisor and we had to figure out what we wanted to do with the community during our time in the field. This caused us to work together and think on our feet more often than I have to in the states. It was extremely beneficial for me to be able to intern in India, because I was able to engage with multiple NGO’s and see how social work is extremely situational and cultural. I will be able to take the skills I have learned back home to the states, with the ability to apply them to work with diverse groups. In addition to using my skills back home, I will be able to apply my knowledge from my field work, conversations with my hall mates and friends, and my classes to my future work in the international field or any field of social work, since we work with international clients in our domestic
