When examining this article, it’s clear to say that the main claims made by the author is that they want to share personal narratives. This is a strength of this article, because it means the issues raised can be explained in detail and is based on human experience and this could be seen more compelling that quantitative data. Also, in terms of social work practice it could be seen to inspire and generate new ideas. For example, in this article it talks about the pressures of time with patients and how each patient differs. Therefore, this information provided could be seen useful as social workers reading this, may relate to some of the issues and this may motivate them to deal with their issues, and they may take new ideas from this article which can help them within their practice. However, a limitation of this article, is that it is idiographic. As mentioned before it’s based on one individual experience and it could be considered subjective as this narrative may be influenced by personal feelings and opinions and may not reflect a valid account of their day. Therefore, when considering is this article useful, we cannot be one hundred percent sure that all the information provided is genuine. Another, limitation of this article, is due to it being based on one person's experience, there is difficulties in trying to generalize the findings to the wider population. For example, we cannot assume that all hospital social worker’s day looks like this. Also, the article is based on a hospital in Canada (ethnocentric) and so other social worker’s days may be very different, if compared to another hospital outside the USA. Social Workers are very important to everyday life. They are the ones that help people in need when they have nobody else to turn too. Also, they provide resources and better understanding of predicaments that you could be experiencing. I will reflect on how the class has affected me, my own experiences and how some theories have connected to my life experiences, and lastly, if the class helped toward my major. This class is important for someone that wants to become a social worker and wants to learn about the different theories used. Also, learning about me during this process of completing this class is fun and a way to see if the social work profession is right for me. There was many theories explained throughout this class but many will not be said because it wasn’t the main points that I was trying to get across. There are two tools that are used that can help a social worker organize a client’s life: Bubble map and Briefcase exercise. There are so many different ways a social worker can help a client deal with their problems and come up with a solution. It is up to that social worker to identify the client’s problem and see what theory fits.
Social workers in the healthcare field can be very beneficial to an interdisciplinary team. Throughout the semester we have looked at how social workers bring their professional and distinct skill set and beliefs to these teams. There are many stereotypes and biases surrounding social workers and other professionals on interdisciplinary teams. Social workers also have different views than other healthcare professionals and use their skills in communication to help the clients they serve, along with various other skills that are unique to social workers differing from other professional in the healthcare field. A social worker’s skill set can be extremely useful when working with specific populations at risk. The relationship between health and the role of the social worker can be different from other social worker roles in different fields. However, it is clear that social workers and interdisciplinary teams can be beneficial for everyone.
To provide effective social services, a social work graduate must possess a multitude of knowledge, skills and abilities. This will be a reflective paper on everything that I know for sure as a student of social work who is about to go into the world of work.
Interviewing and research skills are needed within the social work profession. Effective communication skills are one of the most crucial components of a social worker’s job. Every day, social workers must communicate with clients to gain information, convey critical information and make important decisions (Zeiger, 2017). This interview experience was an opportunity to explore the daily challenges and rewards of a licensed social worker. I was excited for the opportunity to interview a social worker in the gerontology sector as this is a specialty I am considering. It is imperative for the vocation to constantly evolve alongside the social climate and the new ways in which we identify and treat those who are in need of support. Social workers can be required to take on the role of counsellor, advocate, case-worker, partner, assessor of risk and need, and at times (as the government seeks to push social work further and further towards the health and education sectors) a servant of the state. The profession is dramatically subject to affection by societal change, thus demanding social workers have a duty to be up to date with the latest developments in understanding how and why people get to the point of requiring social work intervention, and how best to prevent and cater for it.
