SOCIAL SUPPORT THEORY

Social means a party of people assembled to promote sociability and communal activity. Support means the activity of providing for or maintaining by supplying with money or necessities and put up with something or somebody unpleasant. Social support means that a person who get support and help from his/her family, friends and others people. It brings out the importance of relationships in human lives. Davison et al, (2000) believe that social support talks about the person needs for support with close others and provide it when others experience distress. Emotional support is communication that meets an individual’s emotional or affective needs. These are expresssions of care and concern, such as telling someone, “ I feel bad for you ” or “ I just want you to know how much you mean to me.” This type of support is what we most often think of when we hear the term social support. Expressions of emotional support do not try to directly solve a problem but serve to elevate an individual’s mood. For example, you may have written that you could send a birthday card or text message with something like, “ hope you like this present ” or “ wish you stay healthy always ”. Providing emotional support can let the individual know that he or she is valued. Beside, tangible support is the provision of financial assistance, material goods, or services. Also called instrumental support, this form of social support encompasses the concrete, direct ways people assist others. For examples, you will making a meal to someone who is sick, driving that person to a doctor’s appointment and also doing laundry or cleaning up your friend’s appartment when your friends was sick. Tangible support is a form of nonverbal communication because often either very few or no words are exchanged during the provision of this type of support. Social support have four common functions that is widely used in our life. Function of social support are useful to us when we giving support to a person who are unhappy and in depressed mood. We can be more careful in investigate expression of others people and give them some social support. This social support theory are two way communication process and more to nonverbal communication because we just take our action more than words just like “ actions speak louder than words.
