Social media was meant as a form of reconnecting with relatives and friends in different cities or state and for branching out businesses and making network. Now, social media is seen as a place where people portray false lives online. People have used social media as a way to find love as a portrayal of someone other than their self. Some people have gone as far as in portraying different people as a way of revenge, bullying and to spy on their love partners and former partners. Therefore social media is being misused as a way to scheme on other social media users in events that coincide with cyberbullying . Young teens are more prone of being victims of cyberbullying because they are know for befriending people they don't know online. "They also are at risk because they tend to share too much personal information, especially their emotions. Cyberbullies often exploit the emotions of others online especially if they discover something makes the person sad, depressed, afraid or lonely. (Gordon par.9) While most catfish ends with the person finding out the truth, there's been several incidents where the catfish ended with the death of someone. A famous incident was the death of a thirteen-year-old girl named Megan Meier back in 2006. During this incident, Meier began a relationship with a boy named, Josh Evans. After months of communicating through the internet, he did not want to be friends no more. Later comments were posted about Meier being "fat" and a "slut" on the website, Myspace. Once she found out what was being posted, she committed suicide. It was later found out the character of Josh Evans was the mother of one of Meier's friends. In this situation, the reason for the character was to spy on Meier to see if she was talking about her daughter. The person who they may catfish may not be the main cause of the bullying but the one catfishing feels that they can take advantage of these people. In an episode of the MTV series Catfish, one of the catfish, Chelsea said, "I made a Facebook to get revenge, and turned [it] into something it wasn’t supposed to". She later revealed that she was bullied so much by classmates that she felt that by creating a fake account, she was in control of taking advantage of others. Just like the incident with Megan Meier, another reason people catfish is by way of spying on others such as exes or current partners to try in flirt with them to see if they are truly faithful. Others feel the need to pretend to be somebody else to try escape the reality of what life they actually live. They may make up their social life, relationship and even appearances just to get attention from others online. In the end, people may used catfish or pose as others for revenge or prank, but there's always a reason why people catfish
