There are various patterns of work in which an individual may shift from overtime. These include: Full time, part time, casual work, working remotely, job share, seasonal work, contract, shift work, voluntary, permanent, temporary and self employed. Individuals change their work patterns and the relationship between these are evidently impacted by a number of social factors including, education, gender perceptions, government policies, family circumstances, employment/unemployment, economics and technology.

As a family shifts through its lifecycle, it will bring about modifications in the work patterns to suit the structural change. For example the birth of a child in the family, affects their working pattern as the new mother may need to take maternity leave from her full-time work or may need to shift to casual or job share to allow for the demands of parenting. Rather then being completely unemployed the parents may need to still work part time in order to provide and support their family needs especially if they have children. Much varies on what individuals see as their primary needs and priorities as they move through their lifespan. Also family friendly work practices e.g. part time, working remotely allow flexibility in hours, some workplaces have enabled time off for parents to adapt to the changes. These specific working patterns reflect on the individual 's social and emotional wellbeing as they are able to both work and be around their family to experience milestones in their children 's life, by being around friends will positively impact their social wellbeing.
