Snoring
Throughout the entire world a person's habits have thoroughly irritated another's. These habits are may annoy one person more than another, or not annoy another altoget-her. With such a highly varied and intensely personal list of annoying habits available, it appears difficult to choose the worst. However, one habit is so annoying that at times it is life threatening. This irritating and dangerous habit is, snoring.
There are many reasons for my choice. The first is that it is snoring disrupts what is a basic necessity of life: sleep. Trying to sleep while close by a person you normally care for is making noises resembling road construction is difficult to say the least. Pat-iently you wait for the noise to subside so you can try to quickly fall to sleep. If that doesn't work you try gently pushing the human chain saw in order prompt them to be sci-lent. Soon you are tempted to smother the snorer with your pillow for a moment of si-lence, half-caring if they survive the encounter.
Secondly, it is almost impossible to convince a snorer that they, in fact, snore. Nothing short of taped evidence is enough to convince them, and in some cases it's not. It almost appears that snorer's have a genetic trait to deny their snoring. A comparison of their sleeping habit to a forest being clear-cut is always taken too personally. Your heroic suppression of your desire to smother the snorer's sleeping form is never taken with the deserved appreciation. The frustration is enough to grab your pillow and smother the snorer for their stubbornness.
Thirdly, and lastly, it is very difficult to find help when the snorer finally admits that they have a problem. Where does one find a cure for this aliment that annoys you and threatens the snorer with bodily harm. Over the counter remedies don't often alleviate the symptoms and sometimes amplify the snorer with reverb. There are surgical options, but snorers are often reluctant to go under the knife for something not life threatening. Your attempts to help by stating that snoring in your presence is very life threatening is not thanked, and is often taken poorly.
Millions of people suffer from the same tossing and turning every which way, getting their sheets all disarranged and their insistent minds abundantly worse. Patients often proclaim indications of insomnia while sitting in the family health clinic. Insomnia traits include hindrance falling asleep, continueing to awaken, and rejuvenating before wanted. One may suffer from insomnia if one shows signs of an increased difficulty in attentiveness, decreased communal or scholastic skills, and a diminished mood or enthusiasm. (Foldvary-Schaefer 111). Countless individuals deal with insomnia for a large amount of their lives and some choose differing treatments, while some do not use any treatments at all. While never being uncommon, the amounts of causes leading to insomnia come in boundlessly; finding new studies and stories every day.
Co-sleeping is an issue that is vital on different traditional and cultural influences. Due to modifications in socio-economic status, social ethics and values, there are variations of cultures amongst countries and regions viewing on co-sleeping (Huang & Wang, pg. 170). For example, in the United Kingdom, United States, Germany and several other industrialized countries, the predominant medical belief is that co-sleeping is to be depressed and discouraged, despite the lack of research that can validate and establish that co-sleeping is mostly dangerous, unsafe, and hazardous (Huang & Wang, pg. 170).
Sleep apnea is a very serious disorder because you can easily die from it because you totally stop breathing. The pause in breathing usually last only a few seconds but can happen 30 or more times in an hour. When breathing will resume in usually results in a snore or a choking sound. People with sleep apnea are usually tired more than most throughout the day because when they start to snore or have pauses in their breathing they move out of a deep sleep and into a light sleep. Sleep apnea is very hard for doctors to diagnose because it only happens when you are asleep. The only way to become aware of your sleep apnea is usually by a family member or a spouse who notices you snoring or have pauses when you are asleep. One of the most common types of sleep apnea is called obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is when your airway is blocked during sleep resulting in pauses of breath. This is most common in people who are overweight but doesn 't have to be. If sleep apnea goes untreated the consequences can be very dangerous. It could increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity, and diabetes. The four known ways to cure sleep apnea is lifestyle changes, mouthpieces, breathing devices, and
Sleep is one of our basic needs to survive, however in the modern days sleep deprivation in increasing more and more each day, causing accidents and medical problems for the people and the community. This essay will look at the meaning of sleep and sleep deprivation and the basic perspectives on what motivates sleep and sleep deprivation with the five perspectives; evolutionary, psychodynamic, behaviourist, cognitive and the hierarchy of needs. This essay will also evaluate the best perspective to eliminate sleep deprivation with the cases studies discussing the general hypothesis of sleep and sleep deprivation.
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which breathing stops and starts repeatedly. Experts have estimated that 18 million Americans are affected by sleep apnea. There are three main types of sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form that occurs when throat muscles relax. Central sleep apnea occurs when your brain does not send proper signals to the muscles controlling breathing and Complex sleep apnea syndrome, a combination of both obstructive and central sleep. Symptoms of sleep apnea include loud snoring, breathing cessation, abrupt awakenings accompanied by shortness of breath, dry mouth, morning headaches, insomnia, daytime sleepiness,
"Sleep disorders appear to be a global epidemic, affecting up to 45% of the world's population" (Noor, et al n.p.). That’s leaving a 55% chunk of the world’s population not affected. More than 70 million people in our nation experience sleep disorders, most of whom are unaware of the impact on their daily life (Wells,Vaughn 234). Due to a large portion of people being unaware of sleep disorders’ impaction, the number continuously increases. Major sleep disorders are known to be Rapid Eye Movement(REM), Insomnia, and Obstructive Sleep Apnea(OSA). Over 80 medically recognized sleep disorders exist with insomnia, sleep apnea, snoring, jet lag, shift work, sleepwalking and restless legs syndrome being some of the most common (Wells, Vaughn 234). "Poor sleep in the general population has been shown to have a significant impact on daily function, including considerable daytime cognition dysfunction, decreased ability to accomplish daily tasks, diminished sense of success and achievement, depressed mood, and reduced enjoyment of interpersonal relationships" (Andrews, Strong n.p. 500). Sleep disorders affect a large portion of society, leading people to have a daily lifestyle of drowsiness, stress and poor productivity; treatment has increased as more people become aware of sleep disorders.
Insomnia Almost everyone experiences insomnia now and then. When one believes he must be in bed by a certain time every night or that he needs a certain number of hours of sleep, it may be the very thing that is preventing him from going to sleep (Munson 21). It is unfortunately true that many people still suffer from poor sleep but do not know that there are numerous programs that can help them. Insomnia, which is due to various causes and includes a vaiety of symptoms, can be reduced or eliminated in a number of ways. Stress is one of the main causes in determining insomnia. It is a fact of every day life and can be defined as any event which causes a significant emotional response. Happy occasions such as getting married, promoted, or going on a vacation can cause stress reaction, not only because because participation in the event is occurring but also in the preparation. More obvious events that occur throughout one's life are the loss of a job, a loved one, or the need for surgery. In such major life changes, the sources of the emotional response is much more easily identified (Shapiro MacFarlane Hussain 49). There are two types of stress: bad stress or negative stress which destroys your ability to operate at capacity, mentally and physically and good stress which improves your performance (Shapiro 49-50). There are different ways to reduce stress. One should try to find a job he really enjoys. It is not the stress of work that wears one out but the stress of frustration and failure. Two big causes of stress on the job are not knowing what is expected and not having adequate facts or tools. Escaping for a while is another method to help eliminate stress. One can visit a friend, go to a movie, or shop. When he returns, he can attempt to cope with the problem. However, it does not help to keep escaping, the individual should try to cope with problems as promptly as they arise (Hauri 111). Even though it is often difficult to make changes in lifestyle, the effort is worth it. Exchanging stress for a sense of control can lift a heavy weight from one's shoulders. The more control one has over his life during the day, the more likely it is that his night time sleep will become satisfying again (Hauri 113).
Parasomnia refers to a wide variety of disruptive, sleep-related events or, "disorders of arousal." These behaviors and experiences occur usually while sleeping, and most are often infrequent and mild. They may however happen often enough to become so bothersome that medical attention should be sought out. "Parasomnias are disorders characterized by abnormal behavior or physiological events occurring in association with sleep stages, or sleep-wake transitions."(DSM pg. 435)

Sleeping and Dreaming Despite the large amount of time we spend asleep, surprisingly little is actually known about sleeping and dreaming. Much has been imagined, however. Over history, sleep has been conceived as the space of the soul, as a state of absence akin to death, as a virtual or alternate reality, and more recently, as a form of (sub)consciousness in which memories are built and erased. The significance attributed to dreams has varied widely as well.

The governments must ban the sales of tobacco products. There are many consequences to smoking like health, addiction, cessation and economic costs. Second hand smoke is a major problem, since smoking is allowed in alot of public places.
There is quite of few people I know now that it effects. Sleep Apnea is a very serious sleep disorder that effects 1 in 20 people. It can affect anyone from children to adults. It occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted while sleeping. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing 100’s of times while sleeping. This causes the brain and the body not get enough oxygen. There are two types of sleep apnea, obstructed sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. Obstructed sleep apnea is the most common of the two, where there is a blockage in the airway. Central sleep apnea is not caused by a blocked airway, but the brain fails to signal the muscles to breath due to the instability in the respiratory control center. Who is at risk? Males that are 40 and over weight, that have a large neck, tonsils, tongue and a small jawbone and have a family history of sleep apnea are affected. If sleep apnea is left untreated can cause major health problems such as high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, heart problems, depression and headaches. If sleep apnea is mild, it can be treated with weight loss and change of sleep positions. The CPAP, continuous positive airway pressure is a treatment in which a mask is worn over the nose or mouth while you sleep. It has a mask that is hooked up to a machine that sends a continuous flow of air to the nose. It is the most common treatment for sleep apnea. Dental devices can be made and surgical procedures can be done depending on the case. I have seen how sleep apnea effects my father-in-law and the struggles he has had with it. I have seen his condition improve with weight loss, but it got worse after gaining all his weight back. It is something that I would never want to deal
For a more serious condition of insomnia, natural remedies are not going to fix the problem. When a disease, disorder or a mixture of the two causes the condition, prescription medication may be the only answer to find relief. Depending on the nature of the symptoms the individual is having, Lunesta is the favored medication. This prescription medication helps individuals suffering from sleeplessness to fall asleep and stay asleep. Medication can help control the ability to sleep (Oxtoby). It can promote drowsiness while helping individuals fall asleep and stay asleep longer. Nevertheless, for extreme cases, surgery may be the only solution. When sleep apnea is the source of sleep deprivation and all conservative measure fails, there is an anatomic problem. A surgical procedure will take place to reconstruct the roof of the palate in an individual’s mouth or removing the tonsils as a reconstructive option to fix the problem. As a last resort when all non- surgical approaches fall short, surgery will be the final determination (Funk and Wagnall). In certain situations, there are not many options when it comes to fixing the problem. Drastic measures have to take place, and surgery may be the only
