Slavery is an issue that was very prevalent in almost all societies of the past. As times have become more modern, human rights have become a crux of all free societies. While many countries have advanced in tabooing discrimination of various sorts, it is still thriving in India today. There are still over 30 million people that are forced into slavery currently in the world (McBain). While many of us hope to think that slavery is behind us, it is still widespread in many third world countries. The biggest offender of slavery is India with over seven million slaves (Theodore). Dalits are constantly exploited for their labor, such as those in bonded labor. Many Dalits fall into bonded labor due to familial debts. In order to pay off these debts, they are hired to work for very little wage. All the meanwhile their familial debts continue to accumulate interest and this makes many Dalits work like slaves for the rest of their lives. This vicious cycle continues from generation to generation and it is impossible for them to ascend their status making it so they cannot educationally nor economically improve theirs or their family’s lives. Most bonded laborers work for seven days a week, are unable to meet with their families, and work in very poor working conditions (Theodore). For some Dalits, their caste is a way to ensure job security and better job opportunities within their caste’s scope (Dalmia). For example, Dalits have a monopoly over occupations that are taboo for mainstream society because they are ritually impure. This leaves a niche market open for the Dalit community to compete in and some can make comfortable wages from it. On the flip side, if a Dalit were to try to compete for a government job it would be extremely difficult for them to get them because of discrimination and lack of resources. This is why, tragically, many Untouchables cling to their caste roles and do not try to rise ahead in society. This intellect makes it even more difficult for Dalits to try to pursue better positions for themselves in the world. If portions of the Dalit community do not wish to leave their caste due to job opportunities then who is left to try to bring about a difference to their own
