The letter that Skylar had been waiting on for a while finally arrived. It’s his acceptance letter to The Fort Valley State University 1890 land-grant institution. This is the conversation we had on the bus ramp early one morning as Skylar was entering the building. Skylar has been one of my best agriculture students for the last four years. He is dedicated and has a strong willingness to succeed. Since the first day of my class he has always had a dream to attend college, but because he was a special needs student and money was a problem he wasn’t sure he would be accepted. He was responsible for the Morrill Act that established federal funding for establishing land for many agriculture universities. In 1862 President Lincoln signed into law The Morrill Act. This act granted each state the proceeds from the sale of public land that could be used to establish colleges designed to teach agriculture, mechanical arts, classical studies and ROTC. This act was designed for the working class; this land grant bill was intended to advance all but because of segregation the opportunity for blacks in the southern states was not an option. This discrimination prompted Morrill to develop a second Morrill Act. This second act established in 1890 allowed the southern states to allow one black and one white institution per state for education and still be in compliance with an equitable distribution between blacks and white schools. This same year General Sherman issued the Special Field Order 15, in attempt to provide land for the ex-slaves. There was 40 acres of land and a mule waiting for the emancipated slaves, this gave hope for an economic development among black communities. The Special Field Order 15 put all the land under federal control acquired by the government during the war to use for the homestead of the blacks. McAdams wanted to shrink land given to Indians for their reservations. The government opened up land, but with a clause. Anyone who tried to claim the land before the given date could not get that land. This clause was known as the “sooner” clause. These government policies opened up land and made things fairer to farmers, the people who make up the agricultural industry. They also let political parties know that the poor farmer needed to be heard too.
He had been scared about being at the bottom of the food chain again. He pulled through well, but had a couple of social issues as this stage in his life progressed. For example, he had some experiences with peer pressure by his fellow classmates. It was important for him to go through this, because he needed to learn about standing up for what he believes in.
In Paul Toughmay’s “Who Gets to Graduate,” he follows a young first year college student, Vanessa Brewer, explaining her doubts, fears, and emotions while starting her college journey. As a student, at the University of Texas Brewer feels small and as if she doesn’t belong. Seeking advice from her family she calls her mom but after their conversation Brewer feels even more discouraged. Similar to Brewer I have had extreme emotions, doubts, and fears my freshman year in college.
In 1854, Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act to create new territories. Stephen Douglass wrote the act in an effort to attract the transcontinental railroad to his home city of Chicago. Douglass needed Kansas, and Nebraska, to become official territories to make it happen. Douglass believed the act would help Chicago economically, and aid his hopes of becoming president by ending The Missouri Compromise. Finally, it’s June 3rd. Laura is going to be graduating from Silas University today with her whole family present. With Carmilla still in Toronto, Laura couldn’t wait to see her girlfriend after not being around her for a month. School kept Laura busy, while Carmilla had to deal with work. They’ve had skype dates and Carmilla even managed to help Laura with some homework over the webcam. Finally, she gets to see her girlfriend face to face and she couldn’t be happier. Carmilla apologized most of the time for being busy, Laura felt the same since she had to work extra hard just to make sure she could graduate with honors. She is and she couldn't be happier.

I can recall the first meeting last year we had in the school cafeteria, it was the first step to sign up for college classes. I was debating whether I really wanted to take the chance and work harder than I had in previous English classes. My Dad was hesitant, but my Mom was pushing me towards it. I didn’t know how committed I was going to be. Not too long after the meeting I had to confirm if I was actually going to go through with it, with not great deal of time left to think it over I signed the paper that said I was in. I didn’t know if it would be something I would regret in the end for overwhelming myself or something that would be ultimately beneficial for my future. I never thought this day would come. I mean, I did know it was coming, but I just never thought it would be this soon. Since birth, Lina has been my older sister, my companion, my confidant, and moreover, my best friend. As years passed, I acknowledged that we were getting older, and that the date of her departure was getting closer, yet, I did not want to believe it. Since last year, she had been in the exhausting process of applying to universities, and by the end of May, the University of New Orleans (UNO) granted her with a generous scholarship. With a smile full of pride and amazement, she accepted the scholarship and reserved her space in the Psychology field in the UNO. Overshadowed by the great news of her scholarship, we failed to foretell the gloomy days that were close to arrive.
