The development of policing within law enforcement evolved from the 19th century era in Europe. English Prime Minister, Sir Robert Peel, introduced nine principles to policing that is still in use today. Peel is referred to the founder of modern policing because paved the way for the first disciplined police force for London and Ireland. Peel’s nine principles developed law enforcement and is used in America known as community policing. I think these two styles are important to have because the bureaucratic style makes decisions by consulting their supervisor then make a precise planning to make sure everything goes well according to the law and regulation. Sir Robert Peel was born in 1788 and died in 1850. He was known as the founder of modern policing. He was born in Bury Lancashine. Peel was a social reformist and served as a prime minister twice and was a home secretary. When Peel was a prime minister he passed modern legislation which addressed working class problems. He also was the creator of the act of 1842 which was the prohibiting of women and children from working in underground mines. The first principle, fairness, says that police officers cannot treat a group of people differently based on their race, gender, or age. The principle of service says that they must serve everyone equally; whether it is helping the elderly, rescuing the victims, or being good role models to the children. The importance of the law says that the police officers should not only capture those who break laws, but they themselves must make sure to never break the law. The last principle is personal conduct which states that the police should act honorably at all times, whether they are at work or at home.
Something I found interesting was that profiling originally came about in order to catch drug transporters who were coming into the country. It was interesting to me because it is used so widely today in order to help catch domestic offenders. And from what I have gathered it seems most useful in order to catch those who commit more violent crimes such as murder, kidnapping, rape, stalking, etc.
Law enforcements have the moral responsibility to make decisions for our society to become better as a whole. It is very vital for officers to follow protocols when on duty to ensure, they are making the proper judgement calls when encountered by any given situation. In the criminal-justice field, especially as an officer, there has to be a moral understanding where he or she possesses the characteristic of doing the right thing at all times to ensure public safety. The community is very diverse within its population, with law enforcement creating relationships whereas the community feels protected it can certainly decrease numbers of incidents developing.
