The poem of Sir Patrick Spence is a ballad from Scotland originating around the fourteenth century (“Origins”). Like most ballads the author of Sir Patrick Spence is unknown. One other thing that this poem has in common with many other ballads of early Europe their are no historical records of a person called Sir Patrick Spence. Since this many historians have come to believe that the poem is based loosely on Sir Patrick Vans, that was sent by King James VI to retrieve his new wife Anne of Denmark (“Origins”). The reason that historians believe that this poem is based on Sir Patrick Van’s adventure, is that there are several events in the poem that consist with those of his voyage to Denmark (“Origins”). One of these being the fact both Sir Patrick Specne and Sir Patrick Vans were sent by the king to retrieve something or someone from another country (“Origins”). Another form of irony is in line 21 with “my mirry men,” which would suggest that they are happy. However, this is most likely not the case considering the dangers of the job, the men would probably been very angry or displeased with having to hurry of to their deaths. In line 22 “guid schip” is used, which means good ship, but no ship during this time period could withstand the enormous storm that they were sailing into. In line 23 & 24 one of the sailors speaks up, hoping that Sir Patrick Spence will change his mind about the voyage. His attempts are in vain Sir Patrick Spence has been given orders by the king and he has to carry them out. Line 24 is the first line that proves that they are sailing into a storm.
