In the common world, newfound love is believed to change people’s lives by giving them a new perspective and new impression of the world but not necessarily in the most positive way. In one of the most beloved works of Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Oberon, the king of the fairies, enrages on prideful fairy queen Titania for her refusal of giving up an Indian boy to Oberon. On the other hand, in Hitchcock’s movie Vertigo, Scottie is victimized for a cunning murder plan of Elster, Scottie’s old friend, for which Scottie’s growing infatuation toward “Elster’s wife,” Madeleine/Judy, circumvents him. In Shakespeare’s play, for feeling pity toward Titania, Oberon undoes the magic potion on Titania, and Titania’s eyes are cleared to see the truth, exclaiming, “How came these things to pass? O, how mine eyes do loath his visage now!” (4.1). Once Titania awakes from both the physical and emotional disturbance caused by the potion, Titania realizes the truth and feels extremely embarrassed by her behavior. Although it is all due to the magic potion, Titania’s embarrassment makes her realize how the irresistible romantic feeling toward the donkey blinded her ability to perceive the truth. Respectively, in the movie Vertigo, Scottie suspects and realizes the truth at the sight of Carlotta’s necklace, for which Scottie confesses “I loved you, Madeleine…Too late... too late... there's no bringing her back” (1:51:20 – 1:51:48). Scottie’s everlasting passion toward Madeleine does not die down by the realization of the truth. By finding out the truth too late to undo, Scottie is upset with frustration of being a fool for not being able to perceive the situation correctly. Although Scottie confesses that he has loved and still loves Madeleine, the newfound love blinded Scottie’s perception too long for him to undo the terrorizing murder plan of Elster. In the end, the truth was eventually revealed once the love cleared away from blinding Titania’s and Scottie’s perception of the world, it was too late to return and fix all the mistakes made and the facts that the characters were deceived by the plans they were unaware of
