During 1937 when Steinbeck wrote the book "Of Mice and Men", women were treated as second-class citizens. This was also the time when the great depression occurred in America. In the novel, Curley's wife is the key women, and she is not named at all, the lack of name denotes Curley's wife to insignificant status. Steinbeck wants the reader to recognise the inferior role of women in the world. Alongside this in “Of Mice and Men” they are also other women figures such as the prostitutes (Susy’s place), and a Women called Aunt Clara who is seen in the novel to be caring towards men. Theses characters portrays the same outline in wanting to fulfill they ambitions, they both dreamt of becoming a higher class in society but Lady Macbeth was born and bred in the honorable class so she desired to rule the empire, but that wasn’t accomplished as she ended up dead, “The queen, my lord, is dead.” Whereas Curley’s wife was also born in a high working class family, her ambitions were to become an actress to be able to work in Hollywood, similar to Lady Macbeth she was also died throughout the novel. In addition to this Both Lady Macbeth and Curley’s Wife show dark colors for example, Curley’s wife quotes to crooks, “listen, Nigga… ill get you strung up”, this quotation shows the limitations and evilness of Curley’s wife, this shows limitation as she only has priority over black people in the society. Likewise, Lady Macbeth shows more clear pigment of evil, considering to the fact she persuaded Macbeth into killing King Duncan for her ambition to be achieved. This indicates that Lady Macbeth is manipulative by changing Macbeths mind to perform a bad deed. However, Curley’s wife displays evidence of manipulation as she tries to manipulate Lennie into liking her by indirectly using her body as to an advantage to attract male attention, Lennie quotes; “Gosh, she was purty.” This suggest Curley’s manipulation functioned upon Lennie as he is attracted to her physic and looks. On the other hand, when Lady Macbeth dies Macbeths reaction is unfeeling and cold, in contrast to this when Curley’s Wife dies, Curley’s reaction towards this was to seek revenge. Summing it up they both are not typical women of they time as lady Macbeth is a queen until she dies and he had controlled her husband.
