Similarly, in Brave New World characters are encouraged to take a drug called ‘’soma’’ which enhances feelings of happiness and eradicates “negative” emotions, therefore, takes away any conflicts or stress characters may feel. I believe ‘’soma’’ is an apparatus to control society as it diminishes individuality which prevents characters from expressing their own personal thoughts and their accurate perception of reality. This makes society easier to control and produces the World State controller’s perfect members for civilisation, who are unable to elaborate their thoughts and be independent but remain pro World State. John’s knowledge and opposed feelings against the tyrannical state causes him to suffer and self-inflict pain, John “seized the bunch of knotted cords” and “struck at his own rebellious flesh” which suggest that Brave New World is so totalitarian that those who do not abide will suffer. Similarly in 1984 they are “vaporised” or taken to “Room 101” where Winston experienced torture.

Winston describes a despotic setting in Airstrip One Oceania, by Orwell creating an image of ''Victoria Mansions’’; Winston's home, a place of destruction and obscenity. My interpretation of "vile wind slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victoria Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him" and "electric current was cut out during daytime hours" creates a restricted and sombre tone and atmosphere which can be identified as a possible characteristic of what totalitarian parties and societies undertake to control the public, this also illustrates pathetic fallacy as the solemn environment symbolises Winston’s mood.
