Similarities and Variations in the Writings of Dickinson and Lawrence
Although Emily Elizabeth Dickinson and David Herbert Lawrence lived and wrote during two different times, and in different parts of the world, their poetry contains many similarities. At the time Dickinson was being laid to rest in Massachusetts, Lawrence was born in Nottingham, England. Also, along with the likenesses, they both have many differences. These affinities and dissimilarities can be seen in poems written by these authors dealing with snakes. The first disparities can be seen in the meter of these two poems.
Lawrence writes his poem, Snake, in a free verse style, whereas Dickinson writes her untitled poem as she did many of her poems, in iambic tetrameter and trimeter. The meter of her poem shifts in every other line from four meters to three. “A narrow fellow in the grass, Occasionally rides;”, exhibits this form of rhythm. Lawrence's free verse style is also a characteristic of many of his works. His poem contains no conventional style of meter, only alternating long and short lines which can also be witnessed in the structure of the poem.
The rhythm and the structure of these two poems directly influence one another. Lawrence and his free verse style are reflected in the long and short lines in his poem, whereas Dickinson's structure is more of a conventional structure. Although Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman had different styles of writing, they did convey the same attitude and acceptance toward death. Both Dickinson’s “712” and Whitman’s “From “Song of Myself” poems showed death was something natural that had to happen and we need to accept it at a certain point in life. Both wrote poems about it as if it were no big deal, but something peaceful. Both poets used much imagery to convey this message very clear to their audience.

Dickinson seeks for inspiration in the Bible, while Charles Wright looks to Dickinson as a source of information, guidance and inspiration. Wright suggest that “[Dickinson’s] poetry [is] an electron microscope trained on the infinite and the idea of God…. Her poems are immense voyages into the unknowable.”(Quarter) Charles Wright whose poetry captures a compilation of influences states that "There are three things, basically, that [he] writes about — language, landscape, and the idea of God." Dickinson and Wright centered their poetry in their belief in God and both share the influence of the Bible.
John Dickinson wanted to remain loyal to Great Britain and oppose independence because he felt that England had given a lot and supported the American colonies since they started. The people considered themselves British and strived to keep their British tradition and ways, so to split for Britain itself would make it seem like they were choosing to change their identity. He also felt that the colonies would begin to fight against one another. The different colonies all had different ideas of living. The northern colonies wouldn't be able to get along with the southern, fighting or a war would break out eventually. He believed that the control Britain had brought peace to the colonies. Reading a poem by Emily Dickinson can often lead the reader to a rather introspective state. Dickinson writes at length about the drastically transformative effect a book may have upon its’ reader. In Dickinson’s works she shows that her works are short and simple poems, while Whitman’s poems and often long and complex. With Dickinson showing that her works are short and simple, while Whitman brings on a more sophisticated style, it truly shows that they use their own unique style of writing. In both Whitman and Dickinson works they have been known for being such unique artist and being original, while people try so hardly to impersonate their style, but they are unable to come close to accomplishing it. Whitman wrote in ambitious proportions, while creating a style of rhythmic structure, creating stanzas and complex lines.
The first stanza is rhymed abcb and the second defe. Wolosky mentions that Emily Dickinson wrote almost all of her poetry in this hymnal verse form – but almost always for purposes other than those of the church hymn. In this poem, Dickinson used various meters: the common iambic and even hymn meter, it shows that “Dickinson was a consummate metrist” (Cooley 84). For example, verse one, three, five, and seven have the hymnal feet ux ux uux ux, whereas u is the unstressed and x the stressed syllable. The feet of line two and six is an iambic tetrameter (ux ux ux ux) where an unstressed syllable is followed by a stressed. The fourth and eighth line follow the feet ux ux ux (u), whereas the last unstressed syllable appears only in the fourth and the last verse therefore is a trimeter (Meyer 46). Her usage of dashes and the different meters in this poem furnishes evidence for her reasoning is not finalized or even inscribed and that the lines must proceed. With the help of the reader’s imagination the line of thought can be accomplished in different possible ways. Through these incomplete rhyme schemes and abrupt stress patterns the openness of Emily Dickinson’s poems are supported.
