Chapter one 1) Our Quester: an ogre named Shrek. Shrek lives on a swamp all by himself which is the way he likes it, or at least he thinks so. 2) A place to go: Shrek has to go find and save the Princess Fiona at her castle. 3) Stated reason to go there: he believes he is going to save the princess because that is what Lord Farquaad says he has to do in order to get his swamp back. Lord Farquaad had put all of the fairytale creatures in all the land in Shrek’s swamp and Shrek wants them to leave. 4) Challenges and trails: One of the biggest trials Shrek faces on the way is the battle he has with Farquad’s men before he leaves for the Princess. He has to fight Farquad’s men to prove he has the ability to get the Princess. Once he is at the castle he has to outsmart the dragon guarding the Princess to take her back safely. Once he is on his way back with the Princess he has to fight a group of forest bandits. 5) The real reason to go: although he did not know it, the real reason Shrek embarked on this quest was because he needed to find true love. Violence is a key component to the development of the theme in the book, The Lord of the Flies. The boys enter the island with a sense of freedom, and even though they are stranded on an island, there is a sense of happiness which is shown through a violent scene. The scene being when the boys kill the pig. Even though there is a sense of joy this scene also represents a turning point in the boys and adds to the theme of the book, being a society with no rules will destroy itself. This theme is brought home by the most violent scene in the book, when the boys crush Piggy with the rock. In the “Lord of the Flies” savagery gets the best of the boys. The boys have lost their humanity and let things get out of hands and ended up killing an innocent boy who they thought was a beast. “There was no laughter at all now and more grave watching. Ralph pushed both hands through his hair and looked at the little boy in mixed amusement and exasperation.”
This is noticeable when the fairytale creatures were banished to the swamp by Lord Farquaad. Since they were not normal human beings, they were seen as outcasts and thus banished away from the kingdom. This is also obvious when the townspeople go to kill Shrek with pitchforks. Shrek, being an ogre, is seen as different from the townspeople and a threat to them. This causes them to want to kill him to ensure security. The second thing I noticed in Shrek ties along with in-group and outgroup, which is prejudice. Prejudice is seen in Shrek during the scene when Shrek has a conversation with Donkey explaining why the world doesn’t understand him. Shrek spoke of the prejudice people had towards him. He told Donkey that people judge him before they even get to know him. People view him as a big, ugly, stupid ogre who wants to do nothing but eat them. This is the reason why Shrek is so isolated and avoids becoming close with anyone. The townspeople are prejudice towards Shrek because of his appearance which is similar to how certain people are prejudice based on skin color. Joseph Campbell identified the stages of the heroic journey and explains how the movie adheres meticulously to these steps. For example, the first stage of the hero’s journey is the ordinary world (Campbell). People take journeys for fun, to get away from things, or to succeed or gain something in return. A regular journey is somewhat different from a hero’s journey. The only difference from a regular journey and a hero’s journey is that a hero’s journey involves the hero going somewhere else to prove something to show what they are worth of, to prove they’re worthy enough. The first scene of Shrek starts off with him in his swamp having fun to an upbeat track (All Star by Smash Mouth), which presents Shrek to be a laidback, peaceful character. After the opening scene, there were a bunch of nearby villagers, who have negative stereotypes about ogres, headed towards Shrek’s swamp to try to drive him away from there (Constructivism). The usage of stereotypes set a theme for the film, to never judge a book by its cover. Once Shrek met Donkey and Fiona, neither one of them assumed that because Shrek was an ogre, it meant he is an evil monster. In addition, everyone else in the movie does not call him Shrek. Everyone calls him “Ogre” instead, further confirming the stereotype. In another scene after Fiona goes into a cave at night to sleep, Shrek and Donkey have a conversation of the aftermath of their quest to rescue Fiona. Shrek goes off on a tangent about how people hate him despite not even getting to know him. Donkey shows an example of personal construct by telling Shrek that he never thought of him as an ugly monster. This scene shows the bipolar dimensions aspect, where people who never tried to know more about Shrek would have a default negative view about him. Civilization struggling for power against savagery was shown throughout Lord of the Flies. These opposite mindsets are shown battling while determining who had the right to speak during assemblies, when the group hunted pigs, throughout the struggle over Piggy’s glasses, and finally with Simon’s death. These polar opposites are shown throughout these examples and reveal the desperation of clinging to civilization while savagery took over the actions of the some of the boys in Lord of the Flies.
In my opinion, Shrek The Musical was a great play that brought the childhood fairytale story of Shrek to life on stage. The costumes, props, and backgrounds on the set were well made and it was obvious that much time and effort were put into the play. The story of Shrek was brought to life on Broadway and was very realistic and produced very well.

In this essay I am going to analyse the characters of shrek and Lord Farquaad, and write about how filmmakers use different camera angles, lighting, music and setting to create an unusual fairy tale. The giant in jack and the beanstalk is what we expect of giants/ogres. In traditional fairy tales ogres are normally man-eating beast, at the beginning of shrek, shrek is what you expect him to be like. When the farmers go to his swamp and the meet shrek. These timeless tales relate a message that readers throughout the ages can understand and relate to. While each of these tales is not exactly alike, they do share a common core of events. Some event and or character flaw necessitates a journey of some kind, whether it is an actual physical journey or a metaphorical one. The hardships and obstacles encountered on said journey lead to spiritual growth and build character. Rarely does a person find himself unchanged once the journey is over.
