Should Young Adult Books Be Added to Schools English Curriculum?

How many books that you read in your high school English class did you actually enjoy? In English classes many students don’t enjoy the books they have to read and some don’t understand them. This leads to students not being engaged in class and some students not doing their assignments. These problems can be solved by adding young adult books to the curriculum. Young adults books should be added because they can relate to what they read (Are), they teach the same lessons as the classics (Bean), and students will be more willing to read them when they can understand what they are reading.
Young adult books are aimed towards students in high school, they are made to grab their attention and get their brains thinking about their own life. Young adult books focus on topics that are affecting young people today like family issues, the death of someone close to you, and other problem you may face in high school (Bean). For example, the book Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher is about a girl who commits suicide and leaves thirteen tapes explaining the thirteen reasons why she did it. While reading this book you can see the aftermath of a suicide and that even if you think that no one notices you or cares about you many people do but are to afraid to say anything. If anyone who reads this book was thinking about ending their life they will not be able to put this book down because they will see how much it would affect everyone around them if they did and it would quickly become their favorite book that they will want to read over and over. In conclusion, young adult books should be added to the curriculum because students can then relate to what they read which gets them interested in the book and any work that goes along with it. Young adult books also teach the same lessons as the classics while being more relatable. Lastly, young adult books are easier for students to understand because they use words that we use everyday, they don’t make up words like Shakespeare . Therefore, young adult books
