Homework has been around since the establishment of the first schools located in the original thirteen colonies. Every student understands what it means when a teacher assigns homework; it usually means hours of the student’s free time spent on school work and not enough time to spend with their friends or even with their families. Many teachers have the mind set that homework allows students to practice the subject they learned in class. Recently, researchers have found evidence to show that homework has caused more trouble than help to students. Homework should be substantially reduced because of the physical, social, and academic deficiencies it has brought to students. According to a 2006 poll, 80 percent of students receive less sleep and are in constant stress. Some students have entered a deep depression from the large amount of homework assigned from their different classes. Large amounts of homework assigned to students prevents them from socializing with others. As a child, I never had many friends due to the lack of a social life. I would spend hours in my room working on school work. One time, I was assigned homework to memorize the multiplication table. Throughout the week, I would spend half an hour to an hour each day in my room attempting to memorize each multiplication family. In that week of memorization, I never had the chance to spend time outside and play with other children living in my neighborhood. With decreased homework, I would have more time to communicate and socialize with others and not be in secluded behind closed doors. Till this day I still have trouble communicating with others, because I never had much practice socializing with others as a child due to homework. If homework was substantially decreased, I would have a better social life and understand how to communicate with
