Recommended: The importance of standardized tests

Pop-quizzes, weekly tests, final exams, and semester exams are just a few things that a high school student must worry about. A standardized test is a mandatory test that students take, usually through the state in formats such as Parcc or Air. They are supposed to be based on common knowledge plus material learned in the classroom. This controversial topic is debated year after year when the students are required to take them again. Standardized tests should not remain mandatory for graduation due to the fact that they increase stress levels, prohibit the use of creative thinking, and the test graders are not required to be trained.
In particular, there is one frightening thing about these tests; they stress students out to a whole new level. These tests must be passed in order to proceed to the next grade. In some cases, a cumulative score must be achieved in order to graduate. If this score is not reached, the student cannot graduate until the points are made up. It takes an average of seven months for a student to receive their scores. For months, students are left wondering if they earned enough points to pass. Thinking about their score can cause them to worry and not focus clearly on the school work they need to complete. In order to benefit from a high school education, a full attention span is required. They’re being stressed out, forced to stop being imaginative, and may not be graded fairly after their hard work. Parents and teachers do their best to help the students. But since the tests are so stressful, the students start to tune out anyone who wants to help them. The students also start to throw away their opinions and creative thinking after being docked points on a state test because of their answer.
