Lawyers are professional liars in the eyes of almost every citizen on earth and car salesmen lie for commission. For journalists to be ranked just above lawyers and below car salesmen, it must be because citizens believe journalists lie and are unethical. Fiona Conway said in class, “as journalists you sacrifice your right to your opinions.” Yet, in this day and age social media has become huge for public opinion, including journalists’. There is a huge difference between a journalist expressing their opinion and an everyday citizen. The difference is that journalists are supposed to be unbiased. Thus, a journalist expressing their opinions through social media will cause the public to become skeptical of them. Kathy English stated that transparency and accountability in journalists have “sky-rocketed” since the rise of social media. English added that by becoming a journalist you have to beware of bias in your reporting. Journalists make it hard to gain the public’s trust when expressing their opinions on social media. Journalists must serve as independent from those who hold power, which is what CBS was trying to do. But, it didn’t work out because the story wasn’t true. Conway mentioned the 60 minutes story that reporter Dan Rather and CBS ran. It turned out the story was false and Bush never lied about the national guard. Due to CBS and Rather reporting a false story, Rather lost his job and CBS had a huge crisis for a while. Thus, causing the public to view journalists and their news organization as unethical. Because a trusted major news organization reported a false story the public became skeptical of all news organizations. Thus, the one false story got more attention causing citizens to question all journalists’
