In the article “Should Community College Be Free ?” by Joanne Jacobs from Us News and World Report. The key aspect discussed in the article was whether or not students should pay for community college. I am for the idea that community college should be free because every student should be able to have the opportunity to attend community college with no cost, many students with the low-income struggle to pay for there education which discourages student to attend school and pursue in there education. For example, one reason that Joanne presented in the article was that community colleges enroll more high-needs students than four-year universities and colleges but, they spend significantly less per student. According to the American Institutes for Research Reports. Furthermore, this shows that low-income students are not getting enough support they need in order to be successful in college. Only 40 percent of community college students earn a degree in 6 years in contrast to almost 74 percent at private nonprofit schools and about 63 percent at public universities all according to the National Student Clearinghouse. It has been shown that community colleges don't provide many programs to help students in there major and during their college experience. In addition this explains that community college should not be paid for if they don't provide enough resources for the students, they shouldn't be paying for there school if there aren't programs provided to help student be successful in there major because students are not getting enough support and knowledge about their career and how to successfully pursue
One major decision one must make after exiting high school is whether to go to a university or go to community college. In the article “Two Year Are Better Than Four,” written by Liz Addison. She expressed her opinion on the significance of community colleges in comparison with the university. She stated that community college do not receive the acknowledgment and appreciation that they deserve. “what’s the matter with colleges?,” (Addison 255). although, there is a lot to agree with within the article there are some faulty statements that two year colleges don’t offer the best education possible and that community college are more engaging and individualized for a student and the price is also much less expensive than a university education.
The idea of freedom and equal opportunity that America was built on has sadly been lost and replaced with a system of quality education only being accessible by the wealthy. In-state college tuition should be free for all students meeting admission requirements, allowing students from the full spectrum of economic backgrounds to have the same opportunity to receive the same education. The incidence of poverty in the U.S. is directly linked to educational level. When a college degree is earned, income levels rise (College Board). The best use of federal government anti-poverty funds is not another welfare or assistance program; it is to make college education affordable for everyone.
According to Trade Schools, Colleges and Universities “Many of America's top-performing high school students never apply to the most challenging colleges and universities even though they have the ability to succeed at them. They often come from minority and low-income households and end up pursuing more affordable, less-selective schools instead.” College can be a burden to many students in a variety of different ways, but the most common reason is due to funds. Making college free for students will help this problem by increasing jobs in the work industry that require degrees, they should be affordable to all people at all cost, as well as the funds should be completely cut off because it would increase jobs and help America's economy grow.
Over the past years of getting a college degree was the pathway to get a settle career. College has been a reason for people to carry on after high school. Now that tuition has been raised, getting a degree seems to drain students with more loans and could be in debt. College has been raised to the point where people rather start working at a minimum wage than continuing with school. This evidence suggests that students who attend at a community college and get a degree is very low, and is even lower to those students who will continue to get a higher education after 2 years of community college. For most young Americans, college has always been preached to them as being a vital part to their success in the adult world; but as they reach this educative rite of passage many find they must take out inflated loans, work part time jobs, or even become dissuaded entirely due to the exorbitant costs of higher education. We must forsake this current antiquated system in favor of government subsidized tuition. Therefore, college education must be free because of its benefit to the economy, creation of equal opportunity, and the resolution of the student loan crisis.
With tuition rising every year, students face the challenge paying the debt achieving a college degree comes with. “Student debt surpassed credit-card debt in June 2010 for the first time in history, rising to about $830 billion — or nearly 6 percent of the nation 's annual economic output”(Clemmitt, Marcia). Not everyone has a ton of money just laying around. Being that financial trouble is the biggest problem for students, they begin to question whether college is worth it or not. In recent years, students have taken out loans to help with expenses. Most students choose to attend a community and junior college to help minimize the debt. Even after graduating with a degree, students still face the struggle of finding a job in this economic time. For higher class families this may not be a problem to them. But for the middle class and low income families, they face tougher times being that they don 't have the financial help like higher class families do. The largest college-related problem is the cost (2016, para. 1). A more detailed study of the effects of having a reduced college fee would have benefited the article. This study would aid the reader in understanding the potential increase in college attendants across the nation. Another helpful feature would be a survey demonstrating the number of students with a student loan, the number of students without a loan, and the grades of each group. This would help the reader comprehend that a reduced post-secondary education would improve the grades of the college students. A college education is necessary today in society. Students can focus on their academics and try to get a high score. The cost of education for each student has become more difficult to afford. Thus, many students and teachers wonder if free college tuition must be granted. Free education must be responsible and funded by the U.S. government because it will help students focus on their studies, and encourage them to work harder in school. Even thought many people think that education must be free, it is very important for many reasons such as the economy, quality of education, and value of a college degree.
Why don’t all colleges make free tuition option for low income students? Some colleges are expensive, but they have a free tuition option. Some people say that if colleges are free, colleges will end up bankrupt. Others say that is not true because they earn money from different directions, such as from the state government, federal government, nonprofit organizations and other governmental and non-governmental institutions. A well-educated people can change the world. So everyone has to be accountable, especially organizations or governors of higher education institutions. They have to be responsible for providing equivalent education for all students who are able to pay or not. Danielle Douglas-Gabriel, in “What these colleges are doing on tuition is better than Stanford” says, “Stanford University has received a lot of attention for offering free tuition to students whose families make less than $125,000- throwing in free room and board for those earning less than $65,000” Stanford University is a good example that announced free tuition for students who cannot afford to pay for their education (Douglas-Gabriel). Stanford’s offer is a big opportunity, for the students to place themselves on a good future path. These kinds of offers would be a great assistance for the students who are not able to pay college tuition. However, these few colleges are not enough to fulfill the number of students who need free tuition. As we know, more students need more colleges with free tuition. Stanford University is a good model to inspire other colleges. Therefore, more colleges should create a free tuition option for students who are not able to pay for their tuition.
