Should Animal Testing Be Banned Essay

One hundred million is an astounding number. When that number stands for the amount of animal lives being lost due to the effects of animal testing in the United States per year, alternatives need to be taken into consideration (“Animal”). Although this testing has provided medical breakthroughs in the past, alternatives can replace the animal today because of the rapid increase in technology. Alternatives such as tissue samples and computer models could easily replace the animal (“Update”). Animal testing and experimentation should be banned in the United States because most of the tests performed on animals fail in humans, they are out of date, and regulations are deficient.
In the United States today, many animals are used to test medications. Animal testing is still used because it is in the best financial interest of the scientists and animal suppliers (Lankford 69). As they work or breed the animals, they earn money. If alternatives were used, then the researchers would no longer earn this paycheck. This is one of the reasons why researchers argue that animal testing should be allowed. Animal testing should be banned in the United States because the results drawn from the animals being tested do not relate to the effect of the drugs in humans (“Update”). The organ systems in humans do not always function the same way as the organ systems in a mouse or rabbit might. Both systems have different means of operating and different jobs. In labs, animals are genetically modified in order to conform to the rules of the experiment. Animal testing in today’s society is unnecessary. The test results usually fail to work on humans, the methods are out of date, and the rules that protect the animals are undersupplied. With most of the one hundred million animals that are tested each year in the United States dying, animal testing is pointless (“Animal Experimentation”). The technology in the future and today is advanced enough that alternatives can be used in a faster and more effective way. These alternatives will save the animals from suffering and dying. These animals do not have a voice, and therefore, they need the people to stand up and protect them against animal testing and experimentation.
