“I refused to fail. I was smart. I was arrogant. I was lucky.” As a kid Sherman Alexie grew up on a reservation for Indians. He was mostly expected to be stupid as every other Indian kid, but he wasn’t he was actually very smart. He taught himself how to read and write by using a comic book. This comic book was about Superman. He would use the pictures and the captions to put together what they were making out. So that’s how he learned to read and write.
In the passage Alexie uses repetition of the quote, “I refused to fail. I was smart. I was arrogant. I was lucky.” He said it over and over again to get his point across. And to me this one quote means a lot. I feel like it means that he was not gonna fail and that he was lucky because not very many Indians on the reservation learned how to read and write. Also, he was very rare because he actually taught himself how to read and write because the Indians didn’t think that was an important thing for them to learn. …show more content…

And that’s probably because this was something that was very emotional to talk about. He talked about the way Indian kids were treated and how they never really learned how to write. And writing was something that he loved to do. When Alexie was older he became a writer. And he talked about how he would go back and teach the kids how to write. And he said that they would pay close attention to him and they would read his books. In the text it states, “They are trying to save their lives.” And to me that means that they were just trying to basically prove that they were smarter than everyone had put them out to be. And that if they didn’t read they’d probably just be regular. But that’s not what Alexie wanted them to be, so he helped
