Arnold van Gennep’s rite of passage theory can be used to analyze the film known as Sherlock Holmes. Gennep used a scheme which consisted of 3 stages, those being separation, liminality, and incorporation (Nye 2008). It’s important to note that the first step in the rite of passage is clearly shown as Sherlock avoids contact with people for days. Sherlock would be uncomfortable when he was in contact with many people and the first stage contains behaviours in a symbolic sense that indicates the detachment of a distinct person from a set community. The second stage is much like crossing a border, or getting past a series of events to face a new future (Nye 2008). Sherlock realizes that instead of hiding in his own room, he should be out there
