Working with Victims of Sexual Trauma in a Group Setting Much research has been conducted in the past which empirically supports the value and success of the use of individual therapy to aid those who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. In recent years, it has been supported that victims of such abuse can benefit from the integration of group setting therapy as well. Much of the research has focused on outpatient services, but has begun to integrate the importance of inpatient services, as many people who have histories of sexual trauma and abuse present with other psychological issues. It can aid them in the healing process of acceptance as well as provide a victim of such circumstances with the appropriate tools to lead a healthier life in the future. “A group setting provides participants with greater opportunities to observe and learn from one another, especially for the acquisition of new skills” (Sayin A., Candansayar S., and Welkin L., 2013, p. 3250). This current research will discuss the topics that may be presented to those who have experienced sexual abuse while seeking group therapy. As presented previously, such trauma leads to adulthood psychoses that are often left unassociated with the trauma and not correlated to the importance of the developing brain at the time of the assaults. Most all victims are stunted emotionally and behaviorally at the age in which the traumas occurred. Understanding this and providing the psychoeducation as well as therapeutic techniques to groups is a considerable large portion of the healing process. A firm understanding the group in which the facilitator is working with, as well as working in a CBT and highly structured format, can provide these group members with opportunities otherwise out of their emotional
