“It was no unexpected mistake for a new continent in the 18th century to use slave labor” (Fast xvii). However Gideon Jackson did not agree to this, he wanted freedom. “A free man counts tomorrow and yesterday, and both of them are his; hunger and there’s no master to feed you” (Fast 4). As mentioned in the book Freedom Road by Howard Fast, Jackson became a free man; he was one of those soldiers in the uniform. Jackson talks about belief, courage and freedom. However, are these characteristics that one needs in order to accomplish a dream. After reading Freedom Road by Howard Fast, I was able to conclude that little is known about the reconstruction and the men who fought for freedom, Jackson presents it in a way that has not be told. The characters in the story are given a different name. “Many of the characters are real persons; some have been given fictional names” (Fast 263).
This fiction story is one that shows everything that happen during that time period yet it tells is as a fictional story but written in detail. In the book Freedom Road by Howard Fast shows that Gideon Jackson, the man of African descent that was enslaved in South Carolina he also left the plantation where he was a slave and fought with the Union Army during the Civil War. Jackson is also fighting for equality in the south. First of all, this book talks about the reconstruction and the civil rights movement. According to the article Reconstruction by history.com states that the victory of this union was “In 1865 may have given some 4 million slaves their freedom” (History.om).
