Is it possible for one to not use their phone constantly? Relying on it for simple math, to take an aesthetic picture of their food, or simply to whine to one's followers about how expensive the latte they just purchased was, phones are always being used and it’s affecting us. “The Veldt” is written by Ray Bradbury and is about a rich family whose children become attached to a room called the nursery which leads them to hurt others. Susan Green writes an article, “Modern technology is changing the way our brains work” that explains the harsh effects of a screen. This connection is relevant now because everyone has a gadget whether it be a phone,computer, or television. In literature, setting is typically used to show where the action and main dialogue is taking place in the story. Bradbury describes this setting as the parents are in the room appraising their children’s cognition and ideation. “They stood on the thatched floor of the nursery. It was forty feet across by forty feet long and thirty feet high.” (Bradbury 1). This example of setting has a connection to the theme that callous desires can go unfamiliar even though they seem nontoxic because in “The Veldt” the nursery goes unknown as a threat. They describe the setting as “forty feet long and thirty feet high” The children are constantly enclosed by this large screen composed of their thoughts and plans which are vicious and unhealthy. It’s also bad because the parents are clueless at the fact the nursery and it’s screen are toxic and there is an unidentified and brutal desire. Evidence from a recent article shows this screen and setting is bad news, “The surrounding environment has a huge impact both on the way our brains develop and how that brain is transformed into a unique human mind. Setting shows the theme because where the children spend their time it is controlled by technology and they are surrounded by a screen. Symbolism reveals it because the screen symbolizes the children’s minds and through the screen one can see their bad thoughts. Foreshadowing also expresses the theme because in the story the element is used to hint at the kid’s plan and evil nature. This theme is relevant now because it shows the dangers of cellphones, computers, and really any bright screen that offers knowledge and assistance. It’s very much present because phones are the future and seemingly the dictator of society’s thoughts and actions. The world won’t stop taking selfies, ranting to online followers, or doing their math on their phones, but they can learn that their seemingly harmless cellphones are having a greater effect on their mind,thoughts, and
